The Svetasvatara Upanishad is a metrical text of 113 mantras in six adhyayas, and it is the most openly theistic of the principal Upanishads. It opens with the great question the Brahmavadins ask: what is the cause? Is it time, nature, necessity, chance, the elements, or the Person? The text answers that behind the whole revolving world stands one God, the self-power (devatma-shakti) hidden by its own qualities, and it identifies this one God with Rudra-Shiva, 'the one without a second.' Its most famous images run through Indian thought ever since: the wheel of Brahman on which the individual soul (hamsa) wanders until it knows the separate Mover; the two birds on one tree, one eating the sweet fruit, the other only watching; the one God hidden in all beings (eko devaḥ sarvabhūteṣu gūḍhaḥ); and the light beyond sun, moon and fire by whose shining everything shines. It teaches yoga discipline in detail, names maya as prakriti and the Lord as the maya-maker (Maheshvara), and closes with the earliest call to bhakti: to the one who has supreme devotion to God, and as to God so to the guru, these truths stand revealed.
Shanti Patha (Krishna Yajurveda)
oṃ saha nāvavatu | saha nau bhunaktu | saha vīryaṃ karavāvahai | tejasvi nāvadhītamastu | mā vidviṣāvahai || oṃ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ ||
May we two be protected together. May we two be nourished together. May we two work together with vigor. May what we study be luminous. May we not quarrel with each other. Om peace, peace, peace.
Mantra 1
oṃ brahmavādino vadanti | kiṃ kāraṇaṃ brahma kutaḥ sma jātā jīvāma kena kva ca sampratiṣṭhāḥ | adhiṣṭhitāḥ kena sukhetareṣu vartāmahe brahmavido vyavasthām || 1 ||
The knowers of Brahman ask: What is the cause? What is Brahman? From what are we born? By what do we live, and in what are we established? Governed by whom, O knowers of Brahman, do we live our lives amid pleasure and pain?
Mantra 2
kālaḥ svabhāvo niyatiryadṛcchā bhūtāni yoniḥ puruṣa iti cintyam | saṃyoga eṣāṃ na tvātmabhāvādātmāpyanīśaḥ sukhaduḥkhahetoḥ || 2 ||
Time, inherent nature, necessity, chance, the elements, the womb, the Person: should one of these be thought the cause? No combination of them can be, for the self, being itself not free, is not the master of pleasure and pain.
Mantra 3
te dhyānayogānugatā apaśyan devātmaśaktiṃ svaguṇairnigūḍhām | yaḥ kāraṇāni nikhilāni tāni kālātmayuktānyadhitiṣṭhatyekaḥ || 3 ||
The seers, absorbed in meditation and yoga, beheld the self-power of God, hidden by its own qualities. He is the one who presides over all those causes, from time down to the individual self.
Mantra 4
tamekanemiṃ trivṛtaṃ ṣoḍaśāntaṃ śatārdhāraṃ viṃśatipratyarābhiḥ | aṣṭakaiḥ ṣaḍbhirviśvarūpaikapāśaṃ trimārgabhedaṃ dvinimittaikamoham || 4 ||
We contemplate that wheel of Brahman: with one felly, threefold, with sixteen ends, fifty spokes and twenty counter-spokes; with six sets of eight, its one noose of manifold form, its threefold path, and its single delusion arising from two causes.
Mantra 5
pañcasrotombuṃ pañcayonyugravakrāṃ pañcaprāṇormiṃ pañcabuddhyādimūlām | pañcāvartāṃ pañcaduḥkhaughavegāṃ pañcāśadbhedāṃ pañcaparvāmadhīmaḥ || 5 ||
We meditate on that river of five streams, fierce and winding from its five sources, whose waves are the five vital breaths, whose root is the fivefold basis beginning with perception; with five whirlpools, its current the rushing flood of the five sorrows, branching into fifty kinds, with five sections.
Mantra 6
sarvājīve sarvasaṃsthe bṛhante asmin haṃso bhrāmyate brahmacakre | pṛthagātmānaṃ preritāraṃ ca matvā juṣṭastatastenāmṛtatvameti || 6 ||
In this vast wheel of Brahman, on which all live and in which all rest, the swan (the soul) wanders round and round. When it knows itself and the Mover to be separate, then, blessed by Him, it attains immortality.
Mantra 7
udgītametatparamaṃ tu brahma tasmiṃstrayaṃ supratiṣṭhākṣaraṃ ca | atrāntaraṃ brahmavido viditvā līnā brahmaṇi tatparā yonimuktāḥ || 7 ||
This that has been sung is the supreme Brahman; in it rests the triad, and it is the imperishable. Knowing the distinction within it, the knowers of Brahman, devoted to That, merge in Brahman and are freed from rebirth.
Mantra 8
saṃyuktametatkṣaramakṣaraṃ ca vyaktāvyaktaṃ bharate viśvamīśaḥ | anīśaścātmā badhyate bhoktṛbhāvājjñātvā devaṃ mucyate sarvapāśaiḥ || 8 ||
The Lord upholds this universe joined together: the perishable and the imperishable, the manifest and the unmanifest. But the self, not being the Lord, is bound through its sense of being the enjoyer; knowing God, it is freed from every bond.
Mantra 9
jñājñau dvāvajāvīśanīśāvajā hyekā bhoktṛbhogyārthayuktā | anantaścātmā viśvarūpo hyakartā trayaṃ yadā vindate brahmametat || 9 ||
Two unborn there are: the knower and the non-knower, the Lord and the one who is not lord; and one unborn (nature) joined to the enjoyer and the enjoyed. And the Self is infinite, of universal form, not an agent. When one finds these three, that is Brahman.
Mantra 10
kṣaraṃ pradhānamamṛtākṣaraṃ haraḥ kṣarātmānāvīśate deva ekaḥ | tasyābhidhyānādyojanāttattvabhāvādbhūyaścānte viśvamāyānivṛttiḥ || 10 ||
Nature is the perishable; Hara (the Lord) is the immortal and imperishable. The one God rules over both the perishable and the self. By meditating on Him, by union with Him, and by becoming one with that reality, at the last all the world's illusion ceases.
Mantra 11
jñātvā devaṃ sarvapāśāpahāniḥ kṣīṇaiḥ kleśairjanmamṛtyuprahāṇiḥ | tasyābhidhyānāttṛtīyaṃ dehabhede viśvaiśvaryaṃ kevala āptakāmaḥ || 11 ||
Knowing God, all bonds fall away; with the afflictions worn thin, birth and death come to an end. By meditation on Him, when the body is left behind, comes the third state: lordship over all, aloneness, and every desire fulfilled.
Mantra 12
etajjñeyaṃ nityamevātmasaṃsthaṃ nātaḥ paraṃ veditavyaṃ hi kiñcit | bhoktā bhogyaṃ preritāraṃ ca matvā sarvaṃ proktaṃ trividhaṃ brahmametat || 12 ||
This is to be known, ever seated in the self; beyond this there is nothing to be known. Recognizing the enjoyer, the enjoyed and the Mover, all has been declared: this threefold Brahman.
Mantra 13
vahneryathā yonigatasya mūrtirna dṛśyate naiva ca liṅganāśaḥ | sa bhūya evendhanayonigṛhyastadvobhayaṃ vai praṇavena dehe || 13 ||
As the form of fire latent in its source (the wood) is not seen, yet its subtle nature is not destroyed, and it can be caught again from its fuel-source by friction, so both are found in the body by means of the syllable Om.
Mantra 14
svadehamaraṇiṃ kṛtvā praṇavaṃ cottarāraṇim | dhyānanirmathanābhyāsāddevaṃ paśyennigūḍhavat || 14 ||
Making one's own body the lower fire-stick and the syllable Om the upper, by the practice of the churning that is meditation, one may see God, who lies hidden.
Mantra 15
tileṣu tailaṃ dadhinīva sarpirāpaḥ srotaḥsvaraṇīṣu cāgniḥ | evamātmā''tmani gṛhyate'sau satyenainaṃ tapasā yo'nupaśyati || 15 ||
As oil is in sesame seeds, as butter is in curds, as water is in streams, and as fire is in the fire-sticks, so is that Self grasped within one's own self by the one who beholds Him through truth and austerity.
Mantra 16
sarvavyāpinamātmānaṃ kṣīre sarpirivārpitam | ātmavidyātapomūlaṃ tadbrahmopaniṣatparam || 16 ||
The all-pervading Self, present in everything as butter is present in milk, is known when rooted in self-knowledge and austerity. That is the supreme secret teaching of Brahman.
Mantra 1
yuñjānaḥ prathamaṃ manastattvāya savitā dhiyaḥ | agnerjyotirnicāyya pṛthivyā adhyābharat || 1 ||
First yoking the mind and the thoughts to the truth, the Sun-God (Savitr), having discerned the light of fire, bore it up from the earth.
Mantra 2
yuktena manasā vayaṃ devasya savituḥ save | suvargyāya śaktyā || 2 ||
With mind made steady, in the impulse of the divine Sun, may we, according to our power, strive for the world of light.
Mantra 3
yuktvāya manasā devāntsuvaryato dhiyā divam | bṛhajjyotiḥ kariṣyataḥ savitā prasuvāti tān || 3 ||
Having yoked the powers of the mind, those who reach toward heaven with insight, who would bring forth the great light: these the Sun-God impels forward.
Mantra 4
yuñjate mana uta yuñjate dhiyo viprā viprasya bṛhato vipaścitaḥ | vi hotrā dadhe vayunāvideka inmahī devasya savituḥ pariṣṭutiḥ || 4 ||
The wise yoke their minds and yoke their thoughts to the great and all-knowing Wise One. Knowing the ordinances, the One alone appoints the rites. Great is the praise of the divine Sun.
Mantra 5
yuje vāṃ brahma pūrvyaṃ namobhirviśloka etu pathyeva sūreḥ | śṛṇvantu viśve amṛtasya putrā ā ye dhāmāni divyāni tasthuḥ || 5 ||
With obeisances I join myself to the ancient Brahman. May my song go forth like the path of the sun. Hear, O all you children of immortality, and you who dwell in the heavenly realms.
Mantra 6
agniryatrābhimathyate vāyuryatrādhirudhyate | somo yatrātiricyate tatra saṃjāyate manaḥ || 6 ||
Where the fire is kindled by friction, where the breath is restrained, where the soma overflows, there the mind is born (into higher awareness).
Mantra 7
By the impelling of the Sun, let one delight in the ancient Brahman. Make your ground there; then the merit you have earned will not cast you down.
Mantra 8
trirunnataṃ sthāpya samaṃ śarīraṃ hṛdīndriyāṇi manasā saṃniveśya | brahmoḍupena pratareta vidvān srotāṃsi sarvāṇi bhayāvahāni || 8 ||
Holding the body steady with the three upper parts erect, drawing the senses with the mind into the heart, let the wise one cross by the boat of Brahman all the fearful currents (of the world).
Mantra 9
prāṇānprapīḍyeha saṃyuktaceṣṭaḥ kṣīṇe prāṇe nāsikayocchvasīta | duṣṭāśvayuktamiva vāhamenaṃ vidvānmano dhārayetāpramattaḥ || 9 ||
Restraining the breaths here, his movements controlled, breathing gently through the nostrils when the breath is subdued: like a chariot yoked to unruly horses, let the wise one hold this mind, never heedless.
Mantra 10
same śucau śarkarāvahnivālukāvivarjite śabdajalāśrayādibhiḥ | mano'nukūle na tu cakṣupīḍane guhānivātāśrayaṇe prayojayet || 10 ||
In a level, clean place, free of pebbles, fire and sand, away from noise and standing water and the like, pleasing to the mind and not harsh to the eye, sheltered and windless like a cave, let one apply oneself to yoga.
Mantra 11
nīhāradhūmārkānilānalānāṃ khadyotavidyutsphaṭikaśaśīnām | etāni rūpāṇi puraḥsarāṇi brahmaṇyabhivyaktikarāṇi yoge || 11 ||
Mist, smoke, sun, wind, fire, fireflies, lightning, crystal and the moon: these forms, appearing beforehand in yoga, herald the manifestation of Brahman.
Mantra 12
pṛthvyaptejo'nilakhe samutthite pañcātmake yogaguṇe pravṛtte | na tasya rogo na jarā na mṛtyuḥ prāptasya yogāgnimayaṃ śarīram || 12 ||
When the fivefold quality of yoga has arisen, made of earth, water, fire, air and space, for the one who has attained a body made of the fire of yoga there is no disease, no old age, no death.
Mantra 13

laghutvamārogyamalolupatvaṃ varṇaprasādaṃ svarasauṣṭhavaṃ ca | gandhaḥ śubho mūtrapurīṣamalpaṃ yogapravṛttiṃ prathamāṃ vadanti || 13 ||
Lightness, health, freedom from craving, clearness of complexion, beauty of voice, a pleasant scent, and scant excreta: these, they say, are the first signs of progress in yoga.
Mantra 14
yathaiva bimbaṃ mṛdayopaliptaṃ tejomayaṃ bhrājate tatsudhautam | tadvā''tmatattvaṃ prasamīkṣya dehī ekaḥ kṛtārtho bhavate vītaśokaḥ || 14 ||
Just as a mirror caked with clay shines brilliantly once well cleaned, so the embodied one, on beholding the truth of the Self, becomes one, fulfilled and freed from sorrow.
Mantra 15
yadā''tmatattvena tu brahmatattvaṃ dīpopameneha yuktaḥ prapaśyet | ajaṃ dhruvaṃ sarvatattvairviśuddhaṃ jñātvā devaṃ mucyate sarvapāpaiḥ || 15 ||
When, made steadfast, one sees here the truth of Brahman by the truth of the Self, as by a lamp, then, knowing God, the unborn, the constant, pure beyond all categories, one is freed from every sin.
Mantra 16

Why it matters today
Everyone who has ever stood at a turning point has asked the Svetasvatara's opening question without knowing its name: why is any of this happening, and is anyone steering? The Brahmavadins in verse 1.1 lay out the same options a thoughtful person still reaches for: is it just time, is it the way things are, is it fate, is it random chance, is it matter? The Upanishad does not dismiss the question; it answers it. Behind the wheel there is One, and that One is not distant. It is the self-power hidden inside the very world that seems mechanical. Two of its images have travelled further than almost any others in Indian thought. The two birds on one tree (4.6) became the standard picture of the person: one self caught up in eating the fruit, sweet and bitter by turns, the other self seated above, watching, untouched; the whole spiritual journey is the eater noticing the watcher. And 'eko devaḥ,' the one God hidden in all beings (6.11), is the verse recited on temple walls and at the start of prayer across India. The Svetasvatara is also the text that first says the thing every devotee since has lived by: knowledge alone is not the door; it opens for the one whose love for God, and for the teacher who points to God, is total (6.23). A student, a parent awake at night, anyone carrying more than they can explain: this Upanishad says the light they are looking for is the light they are looking with.
