सोमस्कन्द
Somaskanda
The aspect of Shiva that celebrates family harmony and the rhythm of love.
ॐ सोमस्कन्दाय नमः
Oṃ Somaskandāya Namaḥ
Etymology · व्युत्पत्ति
A compound of 'Sa' (with) + 'Uma' (Parvati) + 'Skanda' (Kartikeya). It literally means Shiva with Uma and their son Skanda.
Meaning
The Dancing Divine Family. Somaskanda is a unique icon of the Chola period, showing Shiva seated with Parvati and the child Skanda dancing between them. In this theme, it represents the 'rhythm of relationship.' Shiva isn't a lonely ascetic here; he is a householder enjoying the dance of his family. It symbolizes the harmony of the universe where the father (Pure Consciousness), the mother (Creative Power), and the child (Will/Action) dance in perfect unison. It is the divine prototype for the happy, balanced home.
Story · From tradition
The tradition of Somaskanda is deeply rooted in Tamil Shaivism. Legend says that the demon Surapadma could only be defeated by a son born of Shiva's brilliance. When Skanda was born, his childhood antics and his dance between his parents brought a rare smile to Shiva's face. This form was so beloved by the Pallava and Chola kings that they placed it behind the main Lingam in almost every temple. It shows that the ultimate dance of the cosmos is actually the dance of love and lineage. Source: Skanda Purana and Periya Puranam.
Modern Context · आज के संदर्भ में
Somaskanda is the 'Family Goal' for the modern era. For an NRI family in London or Toronto, trying to pass on values to their children while living in a fast-paced world, Somaskanda is the anchor. It represents 'Quality Time.' It's the Sunday morning breakfast, the shared heritage, and the dance of generations. It reminds us that our spiritual practice isn't complete if it isolates us from our loved ones. Your 'dance floor' is your home.
Meditation · ध्यान
Visualize yourself sitting in a circle with your loved ones. See a thread of golden light connecting all your hearts. As you breathe in, feel the support of your ancestors; as you breathe out, send love to the future generations. Experience the rhythm of the family unit as a sacred dance.
