Story · From tradition
The Bhagavata Purana (Canto 8, Chapters 5-7) tells the story of the Samudra Manthan — the churning of the Kshira Sagara. When the Devas lost their power due to Sage Durvasa's curse, Vishnu instructed them to churn the Ocean of Milk using Mount Mandara as the churning rod and Vasuki the serpent as the rope. But here is the detail most retellings skip: during the churning, the first thing that emerged was Halahala — lethal poison that threatened to destroy everything. The ocean of nourishment produced death first. Shiva swallowed it. Only then did the Amrita, Lakshmi, Kaustubha, and Airavata emerge. The teaching is precise: the ocean of abundance does not spare you from poison. It produces the poison AND the one who can swallow it. Both are part of the nourishment.
