करुणा से बने, जिनका होने का हर आयाम उस करुणा से संतृप्त है जो उनकी प्रकृति से अविभाज्य है

करुणामय दत्तात्रेय को करुणा से बने (करुणा-मय) नाम देता है। 'मय' प्रत्यय गुणवत्ता को पदार्थ में बदलता है: करुणा रखने वाले नहीं बल्कि वह जिनका अस्तित्व ही करुणा है। भारत की भक्ति परम्परा लगातार इस पहचान की ओर बढ़ती है: दत्तात्रेय से करुणा माँगने वाला भक्त अन्ततः खोजता है कि वह करुणा से ही करुणा माँग रहा है।
