Kamala Ashtakam

nyaṅkāvarātibhayaśaṅkākule dhṛtadṛgaṅkāyatiḥ praṇamatāṃ śaṅkākalaṅkayutapaṅkāyatāśmaśitaṭaṅkāyitasvacaritā | tvaṃ kāladeśapadaśaṅkātipātipatisaṅkāśa vaibhavayutā śaṃ kāmamātaraniśaṃ kāmanīyamiha saṅkāśayāśu kṛpayā ||1||

हे समस्त कामनाओं को पूर्ण करने वाली माता, भय और शंका से व्याकुल होकर आपको प्रणाम करने वालों के लिए, जो काल, देश और परिस्थिति में सदा वैभवयुक्त हैं -- अपनी कृपा से शीघ्र और निरंतर यहाँ अभीष्ट कल्याण प्रकट करें।

O Mother who fulfills all desires, for those who bow to you overwhelmed by fear and apprehension, you whose majesty attends every time, place and circumstance -- by your grace, swiftly and unceasingly manifest here the auspicious good that is longed for.

ācāntaraṅgadalimocāntaraṅgarucivācāṃ taraṅgagatibhiḥ kācāṭanāya kaṭuvācāṭabhāvayutanīcāṭanaṃ na kalaye | vācāmagocarasadācārasūrijanatācāturīvivṛtaye prācāṃ gatiṃ kuśalavācāṃ jagajjanani yācāmi devi bhavatīm ||2||

हे जगज्जननी देवी, मैं कटु वाणी और नीच आचरण नहीं चाहता; मैं आपसे विद्वानों और सदाचारी जनों द्वारा अनुसरित कुशल एवं परिष्कृत वाणी का सर्वश्रेष्ठ मार्ग माँगता हूँ।

O Mother of the universe, O Goddess, I do not seek crude speech or lowly ways; instead I beg of you the foremost path of eloquent, cultured speech -- the way followed by the wise and virtuous.

ceṭīkṛtāmaravadhūṭīkarāgradhṛtapeṭīpuṭārghyasumano- vīṭīdalakramukapāṭīrapaṅkanavaśāṭīkṛtāṅgaracanā | kheṭīkamānaśatakoṭīkarābjajajaṭāṭīravanditapadā yā ṭīkate'bjavanamāṭīkatāṃ hṛdayavāṭīmatīva kamalā ||3||

देवांगनाएँ जिनकी सेविकाएँ बनी हैं, जो अपनी अंगुलियों में फूल, पान, सुपारी और चंदन के पात्र धारण करती हैं, उनके शरीर को नवीन वस्त्रों से सजाती हैं; जिनके चरणों की वंदना कमल से उत्पन्न ब्रह्मा और जटाधारी शिव करते हैं; जो हृदय के उद्यान को कमलों के वन में बदल देती हैं, वे अत्यंत कमला हैं।

Celestial maidens, made her handmaidens, hold caskets of flowers, betel, areca nut, and sandal paste in their fingertips, adorning her form with fine new garments; her feet are worshipped by lotus-born Brahma and matted-locked Shiva -- she who turns the garden of the heart into an abundant grove of lotuses: that is Kamala.

svāntāntarālakṛtakāntāgamāntaśataśāntāntarāghanikarāḥ śāntārthakāntavakṛtāntā bhajanti hṛdi dāntā durantatapasā | yāṃ tānatāpabhavatāntātibhītajagatāṃ tāpanodanapaṭuṃ māṃ tārayatvaśubhakāntārato'dya harikāntākaṭākṣalaharī ||4||

संयमी साधक अपने हृदय में अनंत तप से उनकी आराधना करते हैं; वे संसार के ताप से त्रस्त और भयभीत लोकों की शरणस्थली हैं, दुःख हरने में सदा कुशल हैं। हरि की प्रिया (लक्ष्मी) की करुणामयी कटाक्ष-लहरी मुझे आज इस अशुभ संसार-वन से पार करे।

The self-disciplined worship her in their hearts through unceasing austerity; she is the refuge of worlds wearied and terrified by the heat of worldly existence, ever skilled at dispelling suffering. May the wave of Hari's beloved's compassionate glance deliver me today from this inauspicious wilderness of samsara.

yāṃ bhāvukā manasi sambhāvayanti bhavasambhāvanāpahṛtaye tvaṃ bhāsi lakṣmi satataṃ bhāvyayadbhavanasambhāvanādividhaye | jambhārisampadupalambhādikāraṇamahaṃ bhāvyamaṅghriyugalaṃ sambhāvaye śrutiṣu sambhāṣitaṃ vacasi sambhāṣya tasya tava ca ||5||

हे लक्ष्मि, चिन्तनशील साधक संसार-बंधन से मुक्ति हेतु आपका मनन करते हैं; आप सदैव सत्य-बोध के साधन रूप में प्रकाशित होती हैं। मैं आपके उन दोनों चरणों का ध्यान करता हूँ, जो इन्द्र के ऐश्वर्य को भी प्राप्त कराने के कारण हैं, जिनका वर्णन वेदों में हुआ है -- और मैं भी अपने शब्दों में उनकी स्तुति करता हूँ।

O Lakshmi, the contemplative hold you in their minds to be freed from worldly bondage; you ever shine as the means to right understanding of existence. I meditate upon your two feet, worthy of contemplation, the very cause of attaining even Indra's wealth, feet spoken of reverently in the Vedas -- and I too praise them in my own words.

dūrāvadhūtamadhudhārāgiroccakucabhārānatāṅgalatikā- sārāṅgaliptaghanasārārdrakuṅkumarasā rājahaṃsagamanā | vairākarasmaravikārāpasaṃsaraṇavārāśimagramanasaḥ śrīrāvirastu dhuri tārāya me gurubhirāradhitā bhagavatī ||6||

जिनकी वाणी मधुर मधुधारा के समान बहती है, जिनका लतासम शरीर पूर्ण वक्षभार से झुका हुआ है, जिनके अंग कर्पूर और गीले कुंकुम से अनुलिप्त हैं, जिनकी चाल राजहंस के समान है -- काम-विकार के शमन हेतु सागर में निमग्न मन के लिए उनकी श्री सर्वोपरि प्रकट हो; महान गुरुजनों द्वारा आराधित वह भगवती मुझे पार कराएँ।

Her voice flows in streams of honeyed sweetness, her creeper-like form bends beneath her full bosom, her limbs anointed with camphor and moist saffron paste, moving with the gait of a royal swan. For the mind immersed in the ocean seeking release from passion's turmoil, may her glory resound foremost; may this divine Goddess, worshipped by the great sages, carry me across.

śrīvāsadhūpakanadāvāsadīparucirāvāsabhūparisarā śrīvāsadeśalasadāvāpakāśaradabhāvābhakeśanikarā | śrīvāsudevaramaṇī vāmadevavidhidevādhipāvanaparā śrīvāsavastunaradevāhatastutisabhāvā mude'stu sutarām ||7||

जिनका तेजस्वी निवास धूप-दीप की श्री से पूर्ण है, जिनका रूप शरद-मेघ सा उज्ज्वल है, जिनकी अलकावली सघन है; जो वासुदेव (श्रीकृष्ण) की प्रिया हैं, जो शिव, ब्रह्मा और इंद्र की रक्षा में सदा तत्पर हैं, जिनकी सभा इंद्र, मनुष्यों और देवताओं की स्तुतियों से गुंजायमान है -- वे अत्यंत मेरे आनंद के लिए हों।

Her radiant dwelling is filled with incense and lamps of splendor, her form lustrous as an autumn cloud, her tresses abundant; she is the beloved consort of Vasudeva (Krishna), ever devoted to protecting Shiva, Brahma, and Indra; her court resounds with praises from Indra, men, and gods alike -- may she be, exceedingly, my joy.

bhāṣādidevakulayoṣāmaṇistavanaghoṣāñcitasvasavidhā doṣākule jagati poṣākulā sapadi śeṣāhiśāyidayitā | doṣālayasya mama doṣānapohya gatadoṣābhinandyamahimā śeṣāśanāhiripuśeṣādisampada viśeṣāṃ dadātu vibhavān ||8||

विविध भाषाओं में देव-कुल की श्रेष्ठ नारियों द्वारा गाए गए स्तोत्रों से सुशोभित, दोषों से व्याकुल संसार में पोषण देने वाली, शेषशायी विष्णु की तत्काल प्रिया -- दोषों के आगार मेरे दोषों को दूर कर, निर्दोष और वंदनीय महिमा वाली वे मुझे विशेष वैभव प्रदान करें।

Her presence, adorned by hymns sung in many tongues by the foremost women of the divine families, brings abundant nourishment to a world overwhelmed by darkness; she is the beloved of Him who reclines on the serpent Shesha [Vishnu]. Having removed the faults of me, who am but an abode of faults, may her stainless and praiseworthy glory grant me special and abundant riches.
