Chatuhshloki Bhagavata — The Four Seed Verses of the Bhagavata

चतुःश्लोकी भागवत — श्रीमद्भागवत के चार बीज-श्लोक

The Chatuhshloki Bhagavata — the four verses Vishnu taught Brahma, held to contain the whole Srimad Bhagavata in seed form, with their two introductory verses (2.9.31–36). Sanskrit text with transliteration, word-by-word meaning and translation.

Text verbatim from the Srimad Bhagavata Purana as in this site's Bhagavata reader (Vedabase edition, 2.9.31–36), checked against Sanskrit Wikisource, which numbers the same verses one lower. They differ in one word of the first seed verse; the Vedabase reading is kept and the other recorded. Read the full chapter

Receive from Me now that knowledge about Myself, most confidential, joined with direct realization, together with its inner secret and its supporting parts, as I speak it to you.

Meaning

Whatever I am in My true nature — with My own form, qualities and activities — may that exact knowledge of the truth arise within you, through My grace.

Verse 3

अहमेवासमेवाग्रे नान्यद् यत् सदसत् परम् । पश्चादहं यदेतच्च योऽवशिष्येत सोऽस्म्यहम् ॥ ३ ॥

ahamevāsamevāgre nānyad yat sadasat param | paścādahaṃ yadetacca yo'vaśiṣyeta so'smyaham || 3 ||

अर्थ

सृष्टि से पूर्व मैं ही अकेला था; उसके अतिरिक्त कारण या कार्य कुछ भी न था; उसके पश्चात् जो यह जगत है, वह भी मैं ही हूँ; और अन्त में जो शेष रह जाएगा, वह भी मैं ही हूँ।

Meaning

I alone existed before creation; there was nothing else, whether cause or effect, apart from Me. Afterward, I am this manifest world as well; and whatever remains when it is gone — that too am I.

Source · स्रोत: Bhagavata Purana 2.9.33 in the Vedabase numbering, 2.9.32 in Wikisource. Wikisource reads "अहमेवासमेकोऽग्रे" ("I alone, one, before"); the Vedabase reading "एवाग्रे" ("only, before") is kept.

Verse 4

ऋतेऽर्थं यत् प्रतीयेत न प्रतीयेत चात्मनि । तद्विद्यादात्मनो मायां यथाभासो यथा तमः ॥ ४ ॥

ṛte'rthaṃ yat pratīyeta na pratīyeta cātmani | tadvidyādātmano māyāṃ yathābhāso yathā tamaḥ || 4 ||

अर्थ

जो कुछ आत्मा से भिन्न सार्थक प्रतीत होता है, परन्तु आत्मा में जिसकी वास्तविक स्थिति नहीं पाई जाती — उसे आत्मा की ही माया समझो, जैसे कोई आभास, जैसे अन्धकार।

Meaning

Whatever seems to have reality apart from Me, the true Self, yet upon examination is not found present within the Self — know that to be the Self's own māyā, like a false appearance, like mere darkness.

यथा महान्ति भूतानि भूतेषूच्चावचेष्वनु । प्रविष्टान्यप्रविष्टानि तथा तेषु न तेष्वहम् ॥ ५ ॥

yathā mahānti bhūtāni bhūteṣūccāvaceṣvanu | praviṣṭānyapraviṣṭāni tathā teṣu na teṣvaham || 5 ||

अर्थ

जिस प्रकार महाभूत उच्च-नीच प्राणियों में प्रविष्ट होते हुए भी अप्रविष्ट रहते हैं, उसी प्रकार मैं भी उनमें रहते हुए भी उनमें सीमित नहीं हूँ।

Meaning

Just as the five great elements are present within all beings, both high and low, and yet remain distinct from them, so too am I present within all things, and yet not confined within them.

अर्थ

आत्म-तत्त्व के जिज्ञासु को केवल इतना ही जानना है — वह, जो अन्वय तथा व्यतिरेक दोनों के द्वारा, सर्वत्र तथा सदैव विद्यमान रहता है।

Meaning

This alone is what the seeker of the truth of the Self must inquire into — that which, through the twin tests of presence and absence, is found to exist everywhere and at all times.
