Dattatreya Aarti -- Trigunatmak Traimurti
“Trigunatmak Traimurti”, the classic Dattatreya aarti composed by the 16th-century Marathi saint-poet Sant Eknath, sung in Devanagari across Hindi- and Marathi-speaking Datta temples alike, closing with his signature line “Eka Janardani”.
jaya deva jaya deva jaya śrī gurudattā. āratī ovāḷitāṃ haralī bhavacintā.
Glory, glory to venerable Guru Datta; as the aarti lamp is waved, worldly anxiety melts away.
triguṇātmaka traimūrtī datta hā jāṇā. triguṇī avatāra trailokyarāṇā. netī netī śabda na ye anumānā. suravara munijana yogī samādhī na ye dhyānā.
Know Datta as the threefold form embodying the three gunas, the avatar ruling the three worlds; even the Upanishadic “not this, not this” cannot capture him in words, and even the greatest gods, sages, and yogis cannot hold him fully in meditation.
sabāhya abhyantarī tū eka datta. abhāgyāsī kaisī na kaḷe hī māta. parāhī paratalī tethe kaicā heta. janmamaraṇācā puralase anta.
You alone are Datta, both without and within; the unfortunate simply fail to grasp this truth. Where even subtle speech turns back, what desire can remain? There, the cycle of birth and death reaches its end.
datta ye'ūniyāṃ ūbhā ṭhākalā. sadbhāve sāṣṭāṅge praṇipāta kelā. prasanna ho'ūnī āśīrvāda didhalā. janmamaraṇācā pherā cukavilā.
Datta came and stood before the devotee; with sincere devotion, the devotee prostrated fully. Pleased, he gave his blessing and ended the cycle of birth and death.
datta datta aiseṃ lāgale dhyāna. harapaleṃ mana jhāleṃ unmana. mī tūpaṇācī jhālī boḷavaṇa. ekā janārdanī śrīdattadhyāna.
Meditation fixed itself on “Datta, Datta” alone; the mind dissolved and rose beyond itself. The very sense of “I” and “you” took its leave -- thus says Eka, devotee of Janardan, on meditating upon Shri Datta.
