Dattatreya Ashtakam (Datta Ashtakam)

ādau brahmamunīśvaraṃ hariharaṃ sattva-rajastāmasaṃ brahmāṇḍaṃ ca trilokapāvanakaraṃ traimūrtirakṣākaram | bhaktānāmabhayārtharūpasahitaṃ so'haṃ svayaṃ bhāvayan so'haṃ dattadigambaraṃ vasatu me citte mahatsundaram ||1||

मुनियों और ब्रह्मा के ईश्वर, हरि-हर, सत्त्व-रज-तम तीनों गुण, ब्रह्माण्ड, त्रिलोक के पावनकर्ता, त्रैमूर्ति-रक्षक तथा भक्तों को अभय देने वाले स्वरूप के साथ स्वयं को एकरूप मानते हुए -- मैं वही हूँ। वह सुंदर, महान दत्त दिगम्बर मेरे चित्त में निवास करें।

Contemplating myself as one with the Lord of sages, with Hari-Hara, with the three gunas, with the cosmic egg, the purifier of the three worlds, the protector in the triple form of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva, and the giver of fearlessness to devotees -- I am That. May that beautiful, great Datta Digambara dwell in my heart.

viśvaṃ viṣṇumayaṃ svayaṃ śivamayaṃ brahmamunīndromayaṃ brahmendrādisurāgaṇārcitamayaṃ satyaṃ samudromayam | saptaṃ lokamayaṃ svayaṃ janamayaṃ madhyādivṛkṣomayaṃ so'haṃ dattadigambaraṃ vasatu me citte mahatsundaram ||2||

यह सम्पूर्ण विश्व स्वयं विष्णुमय है, शिवमय है, ब्रह्मा और मुनीन्द्रों से युक्त है; ब्रह्मा-इन्द्रादि देवगण जिसकी अर्चना करते हैं उससे युक्त है; सत्य स्वयं समुद्रमय है; सातों लोक, समस्त प्राणी और बीच में खड़े वृक्ष भी उन्हीं से युक्त हैं। मैं वही हूँ। वह सुंदर, महान दत्त दिगम्बर मेरे चित्त में निवास करें।

The universe itself is full of Vishnu, full of Shiva, full of Brahma and the lords of sages; full of the multitude of gods headed by Brahma and Indra who are worshipped; truth itself is full of the ocean; the seven worlds are full of Him, full of beings, full of the trees standing among them. I am That. May that beautiful, great Datta Digambara dwell in my heart.

ādityādigrahā svadhāṛṣigaṇaṃ vedoktamārge svayaṃ vedaṃ śāstra-purāṇapuṇyakathitaṃ jyotisvarūpaṃ śivam | evaṃ śāstrasvarūpayā trayaguṇaistrailokyarakṣākaraṃ so'haṃ dattadigambaraṃ vasatu me citte mahatsundaram ||3||

सूर्य आदि ग्रह, पितर और ऋषिगण -- सभी स्वयं वेदोक्त मार्ग पर चलते हैं; वे स्वयं वेद हैं, शास्त्र-पुराणों में कथित पुण्य वस्तु हैं, ज्योतिस्वरूप और शिव हैं। इस प्रकार शास्त्रस्वरूप होकर तीनों गुणों द्वारा वे त्रैलोक्य-रक्षक हैं। मैं वही हूँ। वह सुंदर, महान दत्त दिगम्बर मेरे चित्त में निवास करें।

The Sun and the other planets, the ancestors and the multitude of sages, all follow the path taught by the Vedas; He himself is the Veda, the auspicious teaching proclaimed in the shastras and Puranas, the very form of light, the auspicious one. Thus, in the form of scripture, and through the three gunas, He is the protector of the three worlds. I am That. May that beautiful, great Datta Digambara dwell in my heart.

utpatti-sthiti-nāśakāraṇakaraṃ kaivalyamokṣapradaṃ kailāsādinivāsinaṃ śaśidharaṃ rudrākṣamālāgalam | haste cāpa-dhanuḥśarāśca musalaṃ khaṭvāṅgacarmādharaṃ so'haṃ dattadigambaraṃ vasatu me citte mahatsundaram ||4||

उत्पत्ति-स्थिति-नाश के कारणकर्ता, कैवल्य-मोक्ष के दाता; कैलासादि में निवास करने वाले, शशिधर, रुद्राक्षमाला धारण किए हुए; हाथों में चाप-धनुष-बाण, मूसल तथा खट्वांग और मृगचर्म धारण करने वाले। मैं वही हूँ। वह सुंदर, महान दत्त दिगम्बर मेरे चित्त में निवास करें।

The cause of creation, sustenance, and dissolution, the giver of the liberation called Kaivalya; the dweller of Kailasa and such abodes, the bearer of the crescent moon, wearing a rudraksha garland at the neck; holding in hand the bow and arrows, the mace, and bearing the skull-topped staff and hide. I am That. May that beautiful, great Datta Digambara dwell in my heart.

śuddhaṃ cittamayaṃ suvarṇamayadaṃ buddhiṃ prakāśomayaṃ bhogyaṃ bhogamayaṃ nirāhatamayaṃ muktiprasannomayam | dattaṃ dattamayaṃ digambaramayaṃ brahmāṇḍasākṣātkaraṃ so'haṃ dattadigambaraṃ vasatu me citte mahatsundaram ||5||

शुद्ध, चित्तमय, स्वर्णदाता, बुद्धि-प्रकाशमय; भोग्य, भोगमय, अनाहतमय, मुक्ति की प्रसन्नता से युक्त; दत्त, दत्तमय, दिगम्बरमय, ब्रह्माण्ड के साक्षात्कर्ता। मैं वही हूँ। वह सुंदर, महान दत्त दिगम्बर मेरे चित्त में निवास करें।

The pure one, full of consciousness, the giver of prosperity, full of the light of intellect; the enjoyable, full of enjoyment, full of the unstruck inner sound, full of the grace of liberation; Datta himself, full of Datta-ness, full of the sky-clad form, the direct witness of the whole creation. I am That. May that beautiful, great Datta Digambara dwell in my heart.

so'haṃrūpamayaṃ parātparamayaṃ niḥsaṅganirliptakaṃ nityaṃ śuddhanirañjanaṃ nijaguruṃ nityotsavaṃ maṅgalam | satyaṃ jñānamanantabrahmahṛdayaṃ vyāptaṃ parodaivataṃ so'haṃ dattadigambaraṃ vasatu me citte mahatsundaram ||6||

सोऽहं-रूपमय, परात्परमय, निःसंग-निर्लिप्त; नित्य, शुद्ध, निरंजन, निज गुरु, नित्योत्सव, मंगलमय; सत्य, ज्ञान, अनंत ब्रह्म का हृदय, व्याप्त, परम देवता। मैं वही हूँ। वह सुंदर, महान दत्त दिगम्बर मेरे चित्त में निवास करें।

Full of the form of 'I am That,' full of the highest beyond the highest, unattached and untainted; the eternal, pure, spotless one, one's own true Guru, ever-festive, auspicious; truth, knowledge, the heart of infinite Brahman, all-pervading, the supreme deity. I am That. May that beautiful, great Datta Digambara dwell in my heart.

kāṣāyaṃ karadaṇḍadhārapuruṣaṃ rudrākṣamālāgalaṃ bhasmoddhūlitalocanaṃ kamalajaṃ kolhāpurībhikṣaṇam | kāśīsnānajapādikaṃ yatiguruṃ tanmāhurīvāsitaṃ so'haṃ dattadigambaraṃ vasatu me citte mahatsundaram ||7||

काषाय वस्त्रधारी, हाथ में दंड धारण किए हुए पुरुष, रुद्राक्षमाला गले में; भस्म से चर्चित मुख, कमलज, कोल्हापुर में भिक्षाटन करते हुए; काशी में स्नान-जपादि करते हुए, यतियों के गुरु, माहुर में मानो वास करते हुए। मैं वही हूँ। वह सुंदर, महान दत्त दिगम्बर मेरे चित्त में निवास करें।

Clad in ochre robes, the man holding a staff in hand, wearing a rudraksha garland at the neck; his form smeared with sacred ash, lotus-born, begging alms at Kolhapur; performing bathing and japa at Kashi, the Guru of ascetics, dwelling as though at Mahur. I am That. May that beautiful, great Datta Digambara dwell in my heart.

kṛṣṇātīranivāsinaṃ nijapadaṃ bhaktārthasiddhipradaṃ muktiṃ dattadigambaraṃ yatiguruṃ nāstīti lokāñjanam | satyaṃ satyamasatyalokamahimā prāptavyabhāgyodayaṃ so'haṃ dattadigambaraṃ vasatu me citte mahatsundaram ||8||

कृष्णा तट के निवासी, निज पद, भक्तों के अर्थ-सिद्धिप्रद; मुक्तिस्वरूप दत्त दिगम्बर, यतियों के गुरु, संसार को यह सिखाने वाले कि वह वास्तव में वैसा नहीं है जैसा प्रतीत होता है; सत्य, सत्य ही -- इस असत्य लोक की महिमा और आगामी सौभाग्य का उदय। मैं वही हूँ। वह सुंदर, महान दत्त दिगम्बर मेरे चित्त में निवास करें।

The dweller on the banks of the Krishna river, one's own true state, the giver of the fulfillment of devotees' aims; liberation itself, Datta Digambara, the Guru of ascetics, teaching the world that it does not ultimately exist as it appears; truly, truly -- the glory of this transient world, and the good fortune yet to rise. I am That. May that beautiful, great Datta Digambara dwell in my heart.
