परंज्योति, दिव्य दीप्ति जो सूर्य की चमक को भी पार करती है और ब्रह्माण्ड के सभी अन्य प्रकाशों का स्रोत है

कठ उपनिषद् घोषित करती है: 'न तत्र सूर्यो भाति न चन्द्रमारौ...' वहाँ न सूर्य चमकता, न चन्द्रमा, केवल दिव्य के चमकने पर सब चमकता है। यह परञ्ज्योतिस् है। शबरीमला पर मकरविलक्कु ज्योति इस परम प्रकाश की वार्षिक सांसारिक अभिव्यक्ति है।
