सवितृ (सूर्य) की पुत्री - सत्य और पातिव्रत्य की दीप्तिमान देवी जिनके प्रेम ने यम (मृत्यु के देवता) को भी पराजित किया

वट सावित्री पर लाखों विवाहित महिलाएँ बरगद के नीचे व्रत रखती हैं। लेकिन सावित्री की कथा मूलतः एक ऐसी स्त्री की है जिसने मृत्यु का निर्णय मानने से इनकार किया और यम के सामने इतना तर्कपूर्ण बोलीं कि वे मान गए। आधुनिक अर्थ में सावित्री उन सबकी देवी हैं जो किसी प्रियजन के लिए तब भी लड़ते हैं जब व्यवस्था ना कहे।
