The Birth of Nakula and Sahadeva

Madri confides to Pandu her grief at being childless and asks him to have Kunti share her mantra; Kunti agrees, and Madri, thinking of the two Ashvins, bears the twins Nakula and Sahadeva. The sages of Shatashringa name all five princes, but when Pandu asks again on Madri's behalf, Kunti refuses, saying Madri outwitted her by calling a pair of gods at once. Hearing of the births, the Vrishnis have Vasudeva send the priest Kashyapa with gifts to perform the princes' sacraments; King Shukra, son of Sharyati, trains them in arms, Arjuna above all, and the five Pandavas and the hundred Kauravas grow up quickly.
