The Death of Pandu and Madri's Ascent of the Pyre

Answering Janamejaya, Vaishampayana first sets out the ages of the Pandavas at each stage of their lives, down to Yudhishthira's span of one hundred and eight years. He then tells how, one spring on Mount Shatashringa, Pandu was overcome by desire for Madri and, forgetting the curse, died in her embrace. Kunti, Madri and the five sons lament; the sages urge both widows to live, but Madri entrusts her twins to Kunti and, after Pandu's funeral rites, follows him onto the pyre with Kunti's leave.
