The Pandavas Return to Hastinapura

Drupada leaves the decision to Yudhishthira, Balarama and Krishna; Yudhishthira defers to Drupada, and Krishna approves the journey. Vidura visits Kunti, who tearfully thanks him for her sons' survival, and he comforts her. Drupada sends the Pandavas off with lavish wedding gifts of elephants, chariots, horses, servants and treasure, and Dhritarashtra sends Vikarna, Chitrasena, Drona and Kripa to receive them. Hastinapura is decked out for their arrival, the citizens bless them, and the Pandavas pay homage to Dhritarashtra and Bhishma before entering the dwellings assigned to them.

Verse 1 (1.226.1)

evametanmahāprājña yathāttha vidurādya mām | mamāpi paramo harṣaḥ saṃbandhe'sminkṛte prabho

It is just as you tell me today, wise Vidura. My own joy too is very great, my lord, now that this alliance has been made.

Verse 2 (1.226.2)

gamanaṃ cāpi yuktaṃ syāddṛḍhameṣāṃ mahātmanām | na tu tāvanmayā yuktametadvaktuṃ svayaṃ girā

It would certainly be right for these great-souled men to go; but it is not fitting for me to say so myself, in my own words.

Verse 3 (1.226.3)

yadā tu manyate vīraḥ kuntīputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ | bhīmasenārjunau caiva yamau ca puruṣarṣabhau

When the hero Yudhishthira, son of Kunti, thinks it right, and Bhimasena and Arjuna, and the twins, those bulls among men,

Verse 4 (1.226.4)

rāmakṛṣṇau ca dharmajñau tadā gacchantu pāṇḍavāḥ | etau hi puruṣavyāghrāveṣāṃ priyahite ratau

and Rama and Krishna, who know the dharma, then let the Pandavas go; for these two tigers among men are devoted to their welfare and to what is dear to them.

Verse 5 (1.226.5)

paravanto vayaṃ rājaṃstvayi sarve sahānugāḥ | yathā vakṣyasi naḥ prītyā tatkariṣyāmahe vayam

O king, we and all our followers are in your hands. Whatever you tell us out of kindness, that we shall do.

tato'bravīdvāsudevo gamanaṃ rocate mama | yathā vā manyate rājā drupadaḥ sarvadharmavit

Then Vasudeva said, "I am in favour of their going, or else let it be as King Drupada, who knows all the dharma, thinks fit."

yathaiva manyate vīro dāśārhaḥ puruṣottamaḥ | prāptakālaṃ mahābāhuḥ sā buddhirniścitā mama

Whatever the mighty-armed hero of the Dasharhas, the best of men, thinks timely, that is my settled judgement too.

Verse 8 (1.226.8)

yathaiva hi mahābhāgāḥ kaunteyā mama sāṃpratam | tathaiva vāsudevasya pāṇḍuputrā na saṃśayaḥ

For just as the illustrious sons of Kunti are now mine, so too, without doubt, the sons of Pandu are Vasudeva's.

Verse 9 (1.226.9)

na taddhyāyati kaunteyaḥ pāṇḍuputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ | yathaiṣāṃ puruṣavyāghraḥ śreyo dhyāyati keśavaḥ

Not even Yudhishthira, son of Kunti and of Pandu, thinks of their good as much as Keshava, that tiger among men, thinks of it.
