The Disguised Ascetic Is Lodged Near Subhadra

With Yudhishthira's consent and Krishna's counsel, Arjuna, still in an ascetic's guise, waits in a grove outside Dvaraka, brooding on Subhadra. The Vrishni heroes, returning from the festival, come upon him, honour him and hear him tell of his pilgrimages. Balarama asks Krishna where the guest should stay for the rainy months and proposes the garden by Subhadra's quarters; Krishna objects that the man is young and handsome but yields to his elder brother, who tells him to take the ascetic to Subhadra and see that he is well looked after.

Verse 1 (1.240.1)

चारैः संचारिते तस्मिन्ननुज्ञाते युधिष्ठिरे । वासुदेवाभ्यनुज्ञातः कथयित्वेतिकृत्यताम् ॥

cāraiḥ saṃcārite tasminnanujñāte yudhiṣṭhire | vāsudevābhyanujñātaḥ kathayitvetikṛtyatām

When the messengers had carried the word and Yudhishthira had given his consent, Arjuna, with Vasudeva's leave and after talking over what was to be done,

Note on the text: Corrected चैराः → चारैः (misprint in Wikisource; caira is not a word — "by the messengers" is the sense, the vowel signs having been transposed). The first line loosely parallels CE 1.212.1ab (tataḥ saṃvādite tasminn anujñāto dhanaṃjayaḥ), but the verse as a whole is not in the critical edition (found in the vulgate recension).
