Vasishtha Teaches Saudasa the Greatness of Cows
Bhishma tells how King Saudasa of the Ikshvaku line once asked his priest Vasishtha what is the holiest thing in the three worlds. Vasishtha, after bowing to the cows, teaches the secret lore of cows: they are the support of all beings, the source of sacrifice and prosperity, and a gift of cows washes away sin. He sets out the rule of gifts (ten cows, a hundred, a thousand), the gift of a bull, the daily observances toward cows, and the verses to be recited, promising release from fear to one who recites them.
