Rantideva's Sacrifice of the Cows
The cows go to King Rantideva's sacrifice and ask to be offered as animals. Rantideva fears the sin of killing them but agrees on one condition: if a single cow is ever unwilling, the sacrifice will end. For many years thousands of cows are slain each day, and their hides pile up into mountains from which the river Charmanvati flows. At last a mother cow cries out to her calf, the king hears and stops the sacrifice, the slain cows reach Goloka, and Rantideva himself reaches heaven. Bhishma ends by urging Yudhishthira to honour and give cows.
