The Origin and Merit of Gold
Yudhishthira asks why gold is the supreme sacrificial fee and purifier. Bhishma tells how his own ancestors, appearing in a dream after he offered the rice-ball on kusha grass rather than into the arm that rose from it, urged him to give gold. He then recounts how Parashurama, still unpurified after the horse sacrifice, was taught by Vasishtha that gold is made of Agni and Soma, and begins the story of Rudra's seed and the curse of Rudrani that leads to the birth of gold.

Verse 1 (13.130.1)
uktaṃ pitāmahenedaṃ gavāṃ dānamanuttamam | viśeṣeṇa narendrāṇāmiha dharmamavekṣatām
Grandfather, you have described the gift of cows as the highest of gifts, especially for kings who keep dharma in view in this world.
Verse 2 (13.130.2)

Kingship is a constant sorrow, and the stages of life are hard to understand. There is sorrow in attendance and service, hard to bear for those whose minds are untrained. And for kings, for the most part, there is no good destination.

Verse 3 (13.130.3)
pūyante tatra niyataṃ prayacchanto vasundharām | sarve ca kathitā dharmāstvayā me kurunandana
Yet in that very state they are surely purified when they give away the earth. And all the duties have been told to me by you, delight of the Kurus.
Verse 4 (13.130.4)
evameva gavāmuktaṃ pradānaṃ te nṛgeṇa ha | ṛṣiṇā nāciketena pūrvameva nidarśitam
In just this way the giving of cows has been spoken of, with the example of Nriga, and it was shown long ago by the sage Nachiketa.
Verse 5 (13.130.5)
vedopaniṣade caiva sarvakarmasu dakṣiṇāḥ | sarvakratuṣu coddiṣṭā bhūmirgāvo'tha kāñcanam
In the Vedas and Upanishads, in every rite and every sacrifice, the sacrificial fee is laid down as land, cows and gold.
Verse 6 (13.130.6)
tatra śrutistu paramā suvarṇaṃ dakṣiṇeti vai | etadicchāmyahaṃ śrotuṃ pitāmaha yathātatham
Among these, the highest scriptural word is that gold is the fee. This I wish to hear from you exactly as it is, grandfather.
Verse 7 (13.130.7)
kiṃ suvarṇaṃ kathaṃ jātaṃ kasminkāle kimātmakam | kiṃdaiva kiṃphalaṃ caiva kasmācca paramucyate
What is gold? How was it born, and at what time? What is its nature? What deity does it have, and what fruit? And why is it called supreme?
Verse 8 (13.130.8)
kasmāddānaṃ suvarṇasya pūjayanti manīṣiṇaḥ | kasmācca dakṣiṇārthaṃ tadyajñakarmasu śasyate
Why do the wise honour the gift of gold? And why is it praised as the sacrificial fee in the rites of sacrifice?
Verse 9 (13.130.9)
kasmācca pāvanaṃ śreṣṭhaṃ bhūmergobhyaśca kāñcanam | paramaṃ dakṣiṇārthe ca tadbravīhi pitāmaha
Why is gold the best purifier, better than land and cows, and supreme as a sacrificial fee? Tell me this, grandfather.

Listen attentively, king, to the long account of the many reasons, and to the origin of gold, which I have myself experienced.

tatrāgatāṃstapassiddhānupaveśya bahūnṛṣīn | toyapradānātprabhṛti kāryāṇyahamathārabham
I seated the many ascetic sages, perfected in austerity, who had come there, and beginning with the offering of water I started the rites.

When I had attentively completed the preliminary rites as prescribed, I began to make the offering of the rice-ball, properly and as the rule requires.
Verse 15 (13.130.15)
tatastaṃ darbhavinyāsaṃ bhittvā surucirāṅgadaḥ | pralambābharaṇo bāhurudatiṣṭhadviśāmpate
Then, breaking through the spread of darbha grass, an arm rose up, O lord of the people, adorned with beautiful armlets and hanging ornaments.
Verse 16 (13.130.16)

muhūrtamapi taṃ dṛṣṭvā paraṃ vismayamāgamam | pratigrahītā sākṣānme piteti bharatarṣabha
Seeing it, I was for a moment filled with great wonder: the one receiving the offering was my own father in person, O best of the Bharatas.
Verse 17 (13.130.17)
tato me punarevāsītsaṃjñā sañcintya śāstrataḥ | nāyaṃ vedeṣu vihito vidhirhasta iti prabho | piṇḍo deyo nareṇeha tato matirabhūnmama
Then my awareness returned, and I reflected on the scriptures. "The rule in the Vedas does not provide for a hand, my lord. The rice-ball is to be given by a man here." So my mind decided.

sākṣānneha manuṣyasya piṇḍaṃ hi pitaraḥ kvacit | gṛhṇanti vihitaṃ cetthaṃ piṇḍo deyaḥ kuśeṣviti
"The ancestors never take a man's rice-ball in person here; the prescribed way is this: the rice-ball is to be placed on the kusha grass."
Verse 19 (13.130.19)
tato'haṃ tadanādṛtya piturhastanidarśanam | śāstraprāmāṇyasūkṣmaṃ tu vidhiṃ piṇḍasya saṃsmaran

"So what you have begun today is entirely right, O best of the Bharatas. But let gold also be given along with land and cows.
Verse 26 (13.130.26)
