The Origin of Gold: Agni, Ganga and Skanda

Vasishtha tells Parashurama how gold came to be. Tormented by the asura Taraka, the gods go to Brahma, who says that Agni, who escaped the goddess's curse of childlessness, must beget the child who will kill him. After a long search through the worlds, in which the frog, the elephants and the parrot are cursed and then blessed, Agni is found, and he casts his seed into the Ganga. She cannot bear it and leaves it on Mount Meru, where whatever it touches turns to gold; from it Skanda is born, and gold is declared the purest of all things.
