Anushasana Parva · Adhyaya 16

Vishnu Is the Whole of the Sacrifice

Bhishma reports what Vyasa taught at Dvaraka about Vasudeva as the substance of the Veda and of the Brahmins. Vishnu is the sacrificial post, the sacrifice and the one worshipped; Krishna is the Veda and its limbs. The Brahmin who knows this reaches Brahman, even one who has done evil is saved by meditating on Om and on Krishna, and every implement of the sacrifice is Vishnu.

Bhishma said

Verse 1 (13.16.1)

dvārakāyāṃ yathā prāha purā'yaṃ munisattamaḥ | vedavipramayatvaṃ tu vāsudevasya tacchṛṇu

As this best of sages declared long ago in Dvaraka, so hear now how Vasudeva consists of the Veda and of Brahmins.

Note on the text: The speaker heading (`भीष्म उवाच) slipped into the text; removed from the verse and made the speaker (the page's heading carries a stray backtick, 13-16-1x, so the parser left the speaker empty). Not in the critical edition's constituted text: lines 68-69 of the CE's inline Appendix I passage (App. I No. 1, printed after 13.8.28 as 13.8.28d@001_0068-0069). Bhishma's speech continues through the adhyaya.

Verse 2 (13.16.2)

yūpaṃ viṣṇuṃ vāsudevaṃ vijānan | sarvānviprānbodhate tatvadarśī | viṣṇuṃ krāntaṃ vāsudevaṃ vijānan | vipro vipratvaṃ gacchate tatvadarśī

The seer of truth who knows the sacrificial post to be Vishnu, Vasudeva, awakens all Brahmins; the seer of truth who knows Vishnu, the Strider, to be Vasudeva attains the state of a true Brahmin.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text: lines 70-73 of the CE's inline Appendix I passage (App. I No. 1, printed after 13.8.28 as 13.8.28d@001_0070-0073). Four lines (pādas), as the page prints them (13-16-2a-d). Corrected तत्वदर्शि → तत्वदर्शी (misprint in Wikisource; short i, as in line 4 and the critical edition's tattvadarśī). Rejoined the words split across the line breaks with a hyphen (विजान- । विप्रो; pausal forms at the pāda ends); the text is otherwise unchanged.

Verse 3 (13.16.3)

viṣṇuryajñastvijyate cāpi viṣṇuḥ | kṛṣṇo viṣṇuryaśca kṛtsnaḥ prabhuśca | kṛṣṇo vedāṅgaṃ vedavādāśca kṛṣṇa | evaṃ jānanbrāhmaṇo brahma eti

Vishnu is the sacrifice, and Vishnu too is the one worshipped; Krishna is Vishnu, who is whole and the Lord. Krishna is the limb of the Veda, and the teachings of the Veda are Krishna. A Brahmin who knows this reaches Brahman.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text: lines 74-77 of the CE's inline Appendix I passage (App. I No. 1, printed after 13.8.28 as 13.8.28d@001_0074-0077). Four lines (pādas), as the page prints them.

Verse 4 (13.16.4)

sthānaṃ sarvaṃ vaiṣṇavaṃ yajñamārge | cāturhotraṃ vaiṣṇavaṃ tatra kṛṣṇaḥ | sarvairbhāvairijyate sarvakāmaiḥ | puṇyām̐llokānbrāhmaṇāḥ prāpnuvanti

In the way of sacrifice every station belongs to Vishnu; the fourfold hotra rite belongs to Vishnu, and in it is Krishna. He is worshipped with every disposition and every desire, and Brahmins who worship him attain the worlds of merit.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text: lines 78-81 of the CE's inline Appendix I passage (App. I No. 1, printed after 13.8.28 as 13.8.28d@001_0078-0081). Four lines (pādas), as the page prints them.

Verse 5 (13.16.5)

somaṃ sadbhāvādye ca jātaṃ pibanti | dīptiṃ karma ye vidānāścaranti | ekāntamiṣṭaṃ cintayanto divisthāḥ | te vai sthānaṃ prāpnuvanti vratajñāḥ

Those who drink the Soma that arises from true devotion, and who, knowing the radiance of ritual action, perform it, dwelling in heaven and meditating single-mindedly on the one they have worshipped: those who know the vows reach that station.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text: lines 82-85 of the CE's inline Appendix I passage (App. I No. 1, printed after 13.8.28 as 13.8.28d@001_0082-0085). Four lines (pādas), as the page prints them. Rejoined the word split across the line break with a hyphen (दिविस्था- । ते; pausal form at the pāda end); the text is otherwise unchanged. Wikisource दीप्तिं against CE dīptaṃ is a recension variant, kept.

Verse 6 (13.16.6)

omityetaddhyāyamāno na gacchet | durgaṃ panthānaṃ pāpakarmāpi vipraḥ | sarvaṃ kṛṣṇaṃ vāsudevaṃ hi viprāḥ | kṛtvā dhyānaṃ durgatiṃ na prayānti

A Brahmin who meditates on this Om does not go the hard road, even if he is a doer of evil deeds; for Brahmins who meditate on everything as Krishna, as Vasudeva, do not go to an evil end.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text: lines 86-89 of the CE's inline Appendix I passage (App. I No. 1, printed after 13.8.28 as 13.8.28d@001_0086-0089). Rejoined the word split across the line break with a hyphen (गच्छे- । दुर्गं; pausal form at the pāda end); the text is otherwise unchanged.

Verse 7 (13.16.7)

ājyaṃ yajñaḥ sruksruvau yajñadātā | icchā patnī patniśālā havīṃṣi | idhmāḥ puroḍāśaṃ sarvadā hotṛkartā | kṛtsnaṃ viṣṇuṃ saṃvijānaṃstameti

The ghee, the sacrifice, the ladles, the giver of the sacrifice; desire as the wife, the wives' hall, the oblations; the fuel sticks, the rice-cake, the hotr who performs at all times: he who knows all this to be Vishnu comes to him.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text: lines 90-93 of the CE's inline Appendix I passage (App. I No. 1, printed after 13.8.28 as 13.8.28d@001_0090-0093). Four lines (pādas), as the page prints them. Corrected इध्याः → इध्माः (misprint in Wikisource; ध्य for ध्म, as in the critical edition's idhmāḥ).

Verse 8 (13.16.8)

yogeyoge karmaṇāṃ cābhihāre | yukte vaitāne karmaṇi brāhmaṇasya | puṣṭyartheṣu prāpnuyātkarmasiddhiṃ | śāntyartheṣu prāpnuyātsarvaśāntim

At every undertaking and every repetition of rites, when a Brahmin is engaged in the performance of the Vedic fire-rite, in rites for prosperity he gains the success of the rite, and in rites for peace he gains complete peace.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text: lines 94-97 of the CE's inline Appendix I passage (App. I No. 1, printed after 13.8.28 as 13.8.28d@001_0094-0097). Four lines (pādas), as the page prints them. Corrected सर्वशान्तिम्ट' → सर्वशान्तिम् (misprint in Wikisource; a stray ट and a closing quote mark, as in the critical edition's sarvaśāntim).
