Anushasana Parva · Adhyaya 17
Faith, Sacrifice and the One Veda
Vyasa continues his teaching: the man of faith who gives up desire and hatred and sees all beings alike is fit for every sacrifice. A sacrifice that gladdens all beings and follows the scriptures leads to the one dharma, and the devotees of Krishna, even sinners, are purified by singing his name. He ends by recalling that the Veda was once one, four-footed and threefold, and that Brahmins now speak of it foot by foot.
Dvaipayana (Vyasa) said
Verse 1 (13.17.1)
śraddhātyāgaṃ nirvṛtiṃ cāpi pūjāṃ | satyaṃ dharmaṃ yaḥ kṛtaṃ cābhyupaiti | kāmadveṣau tyajya sarveṣu tulyaḥ | śraddhāpūtaḥ sarvayajñeṣu yogyaḥ
The man who embraces faith, renunciation, tranquillity and worship, truth and dharma and what is rightly done, who gives up desire and hatred, is the same towards all and is purified by faith, is fit for every sacrifice.
Note on the text: The speaker heading (`द्वैपायन उवाच) slipped into the text; removed from the verse and made the speaker (the page's heading carries a stray backtick, 13-17-1x, so the parser left the speaker empty). Corrected श्रद्दात्यागं → श्रद्धात्यागं (misprint in Wikisource; द्द for द्ध; the critical edition has the two words śraddhāṃ tyāgaṃ). Not in the critical edition's constituted text: lines 98-101 of the CE's inline Appendix I passage (App. I No. 1, printed after 13.8.28 as 13.8.28d@001_0098-0101). Four lines (pādas), as the page prints them.
Verse 2 (13.17.2)
yasminyajñe sarvabhūtāḥ prahṛṣṭāḥ | sarve cārambhāḥ śāstradṛṣṭāḥ pravṛttāḥ | dharmyairarthyairye yajante dhruvaṃ te | pūtātmāno dharmamekaṃ bhajante
In the sacrifice where all beings rejoice and every undertaking that is begun is one the scriptures have shown, those who sacrifice with lawful and worthy means are surely pure of soul and hold to the one dharma.
Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text: lines 102-105 of the CE's inline Appendix I passage (App. I No. 1, printed after 13.8.28 as 13.8.28d@001_0102-0105). Four lines (pādas), as the page prints them.
Verse 3 (13.17.3)
ekākṣaraṃ dvyakṣaramekameva | sadā yajante niyatāḥ pratītāḥ | dṛṣṭvā manāgarcayitvā sma viprāḥ | satāṃ mārgaṃ taṃ dhruvaṃ sambhajante
Controlled and trusting, they ever worship the One alone, whether as the one-syllabled or the two-syllabled; Brahmins who have seen him and honoured him even a little firmly follow that path of the good.
Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text: lines 106-109 of the CE's inline Appendix I passage (App. I No. 1, printed after 13.8.28 as 13.8.28d@001_0106-0109). Four lines (pādas), as the page prints them.
Verse 4 (13.17.4)
pāpātmānaḥ krodharāgābhibhūtāḥ | kṛṣṇe bhaktā nāma saṅkīrtayantaḥ | pūtātmāno yajñaśīlāḥ sumedhā | yajñasyānte kīrtilokānbhajante
Men of sinful nature, overcome by anger and passion, who are devoted to Krishna and sing his name, become pure of soul, given to sacrifice and wise; at the end of the sacrifice they reach the worlds of renown.
Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text: lines 110-113 of the CE's inline Appendix I passage (App. I No. 1, printed after 13.8.28 as 13.8.28d@001_0110-0113). Four lines (pādas), as the page prints them. Corrected क्रोधरगाभिभूताः → क्रोधरागाभिभूताः (misprint in Wikisource; short a for the long ā of rāga, as in the critical edition's krodharāgābhibhūtāḥ).
Verse 5 (13.17.5)
eko vedo brāhmaṇānāṃ babhūva | catuṣpādastriguṇo brahmaśīrṣaḥ | pādaṃpādaṃ brāhmaṇā vedamāhuḥ | tretākāle taṃ ca taṃ viddhi śīrṣam
The Veda of the Brahmins was one, four-footed, threefold in quality, with Brahman as its head. Brahmins speak of the Veda foot by foot; in the Treta age, know each of those to be a head.
Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text: lines 114-117 of the CE's inline Appendix I passage (App. I No. 1, printed after 13.8.28 as 13.8.28d@001_0114-0117). Four lines (pādas), as the page prints them. Removed the closing quote with the doubled danda (।।') by which Wikisource ends the passage it opened with a backtick in the heading. Rejoined the word split across the line break with a hyphen (वेदमाहु- । त्रेताकाले; pausal form at the pāda end); the text is otherwise unchanged.
