Anushasana Parva · Adhyaya 18

Krishna Is Worshipped in Every Sacrifice

Vyasa concludes his teaching to the king of Madra: all the Vedas and sacrifices are Krishna, and Brahmins who truly know him have completed every rite. All gods worship Vasudeva, and those who know the Lord, with faith and devotion, reach worlds free of misery and are touched by purity of being. The king of Madra honours Vyasa and Krishna, and Bhishma bows to Krishna.

Verse 1 (13.18.1)

sarve vedāḥ sarvavedyāḥ saśāstrāḥ | sarve yajñāḥ sarva ijyāśca kṛṣṇaḥ | viduḥ kṛṣṇaṃ brāhmaṇāstatvato ye | teṣāṃ rājansarvayajñaḥ samāptaḥ

All the Vedas, all that is to be known, with the scriptures; all the sacrifices, all the objects of worship: all is Krishna. Those Brahmins who truly know Krishna have, O king, completed every sacrifice.

Note on the text: The speaker heading (`द्वैपायन उवाच) slipped into the text; removed from the verse and made the speaker (the page's heading carries a stray backtick, 13-18-1x, so the parser left the speaker empty). Corrected सर्व इत्यश्च → सर्व इज्याश्च (misprint in Wikisource; the critical edition reads sarva ijyāś ca). Wikisource सर्वयज्ञः समाप्तः against CE sarvayajñāḥ samāptāḥ is a recension variant, kept. Not in the critical edition's constituted text: lines 118-121 of the CE's inline Appendix I passage (App. I No. 1, printed after 13.8.28 as 13.8.28d@001_0118-0121). Four lines (pādas), as the page prints them.

Verse 2 (13.18.2)

jñeyo yogī brāhmaṇairvedatatvaiḥ | āraṇyakaiḥ saiṣa kṛṣṇaḥ prabhutvāt | sarvānyajñānbrāhmaṇānbrahma caiva | vyāpyātiṣṭhaddevadevastriloke

He is to be known as the yogin by Brahmins who know the truths of the Veda and the Aranyakas, for this Krishna is the Lord; the god of gods stands in the three worlds pervading all sacrifices, all Brahmins, and Brahman itself.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text: lines 122-125 of the CE's inline Appendix I passage (App. I No. 1, printed after 13.8.28 as 13.8.28d@001_0122-0125). Four lines (pādas), as the page prints them. Rejoined the word split across the line break with a hyphen (वेदतत्वै- । आरण्यकैः; pausal form at the pāda end, where the CE prints tattvair); the text is otherwise unchanged.

Verse 3 (13.18.3)

sa eṣa devaḥ śakramīśaṃ yajānaṃ | prītyā prāha kratuyaṣṭāramagryam | na mā śakro vedavedārthatatvāt | bhakto bhaktyā śuddhabhāvapradhānaḥ

This god, in his affection, spoke to Shakra, the lord who was sacrificing, the foremost of sacrificers. Shakra does not know me from the essence of the Veda and its meanings; he is a devotee, and his devotion rests chiefly on purity of heart.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text: lines 126-129 of the CE's inline Appendix I passage (App. I No. 1, printed after 13.8.28 as 13.8.28d@001_0126-0129). Four lines (pādas), as the page prints them. Rejoined the word split across the line break with a hyphen (वेदवेदार्थतत्वा- । भक्तो; pausal form at the pāda end); the text is otherwise unchanged. Wikisource वेदवेदार्थ° against CE vedārtha° is a recension variant, kept. Lines 3-4 are in the first person and are apparently the Lord's own words, but the page prints no heading for them, so the verse stays with the narrator Dvaipayana.

Krishna (the Blessed Lord) said

Verse 4 (13.18.4)

mā jānante brahmaśīrṣaṃ variṣṭhaṃ | viśve viśvaṃ brahmayoniṃ hyayonim | sarvatrāhaṃ śāśvataḥ śāśvateśaḥ | kṛtsno vedo'gnirnirguṇo'nantatejāḥ

All know me as the most excellent Brahman-head, the universe itself, the womb of Brahman and yet without a womb. Everywhere I am the eternal, the lord of the eternal; I am the whole Veda, Agni, free of qualities, of endless radiance.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text: lines 130-133 of the CE's inline Appendix I passage (App. I No. 1, printed after 13.8.28 as 13.8.28d@001_0130-0133). Four lines (pādas), as the page prints them. The page prints no speaker heading for this verse; it is wholly in the first person, the Lord (Krishna) speaking of himself, so it is given to him (his next headed speech, भवगानुवाच [sic] for भगवानुवाच, begins at 18.7). Wikisource मा जानन्ते (epic mā for mām) and कृत्स्नो वेदोऽग्निर्निर्गुणः against CE māṃ jānante and kṛtsno vedo nirguṇaḥ are recension variants, kept.

Verse 5 (13.18.5)

sarve devā vāsudevaṃ yajante | tato buddhyā mārgamāṇāstanūnām | sarvānkāmānprāpnuvante viśālān | trailokye'sminkṛṣṇanāmābhidhānāt

All the gods worship Vasudeva; then, searching out by understanding the ways of embodied beings, they obtain all their vast desires in these three worlds through uttering the name of Krishna.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text: lines 134-137 of the CE's inline Appendix I passage (App. I No. 1, printed after 13.8.28 as 13.8.28d@001_0134-0137). Four lines (pādas), as the page prints them. Rejoined the word split across the line break with a hyphen (विशालां- । त्रैलोक्ये; pausal form at the pāda end, where the CE prints viśālāṃs); the text is otherwise unchanged.

Verse 6 (13.18.6)

kṛṣṇo yajñairijyate yāyajūkaiḥ | kṛṣṇo vīryairijyate vikramadbhiḥ | kṛṣṇo vākyairijyate sammṛśānaiḥ | kṛṣṇo muktairijyate vītamohaiḥ

Krishna is worshipped in sacrifices by the constant sacrificers; Krishna is worshipped with feats of strength by the valiant; Krishna is worshipped in words by those who reflect; Krishna is worshipped by the liberated, free of delusion.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text: lines 138-141 of the CE's inline Appendix I passage (App. I No. 1, printed after 13.8.28 as 13.8.28d@001_0138-0141). Four lines (pādas), as the page prints them.

Verse 7 (13.18.7)

vidyāvantaḥ somapā ye vipāpā | iṣṭvā yajñairgocaraṃ prārthayante

The learned, sinless drinkers of Soma, having sacrificed with sacrifices, seek to come within his reach.

Note on the text: First half of Wikisource's verse 7, split at the speaker heading that the page prints in the middle of the verse (भवगानुवाच, 13-18-7x); the second half is the next verse. Not in the critical edition's constituted text: lines 142-143 of the CE's inline Appendix I passage (App. I No. 1, printed after 13.8.28 as 13.8.28d@001_0142-0143). Corrected यज्ञेर्गोचरं → यज्ञैर्गोचरं (misprint in Wikisource; ए for ऐ, as in the critical edition's yajñair).

Verse 8 (13.18.8)

sarvaṃ krāntaṃ devalokaṃ viśālam | ante gatvā muktilokaṃ bhajanti

The whole wide world of the gods has been traversed; at the end they go and reach the world of release.

Note on the text: Second half of Wikisource's verse 7, split at the speaker heading that the page prints in the middle of the verse (भवगानुवाच, a misspelling of भगवानुवाच, 13-18-7x); this half is the Lord's. Not in the critical edition's constituted text: lines 144-145 of the CE's inline Appendix I passage (App. I No. 1, printed after 13.8.28 as 13.8.28d@001_0144-0145). Rejoined the word split across the line break with a hyphen (विशाल- । अन्ते; pausal form at the pāda end); the text is otherwise unchanged. Verse 9 (13.18.9)

evaṃ sarve tvāśramāḥ suvratā ye | māṃ jānanto yānti lokānadīnān | ye dhyānadīkṣāmudvahanto vipāpā | jyotirbhūtvā devalokaṃ bhajanti

So all those of the life-stages who keep good vows, knowing me, go to worlds free of misery; and those sinless ones who bear the consecration of meditation become light and attain the world of the gods.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text: lines 146-149 of the CE's inline Appendix I passage (App. I No. 1, printed after 13.8.28 as 13.8.28d@001_0146-0149). Four lines (pādas), as the page prints them. The input's speaker spelling भवगान् (from the page's heading भवगानुवाच) is corrected to भगवान्. The page labels the last line 13-18-8c twice (for 8d).

Verse 10 (13.18.10)

pūjyante māṃ pūjayantaḥ prahṛṣṭā | māṃ jānantaḥ śraddhayā vāsudevam | bhaktyā tuṣṭo'haṃ tasya sattvaṃ prayacche | satvaspṛṣṭo vītamoho'yameti

Those who worship me with joy are themselves honoured; those who know me, Vasudeva, with faith, I, pleased by their devotion, grant purity of being; touched by that purity and freed from delusion, such a one comes to me.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text: lines 150-153 of the CE's inline Appendix I passage (App. I No. 1, printed after 13.8.28 as 13.8.28d@001_0150-0153). jyotīṃṣi śuklāni ca yāni loke | trayo lokā lokapālāstrayaśca | trayo'gnayaścāhutayaśca pañca | sarve devā devakīputra eva

The bright lights that are in the world, the three worlds, the guardians of the world and the three besides, the three fires and the five oblations: all the gods are the son of Devaki alone.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text: lines 154-157 of the CE's inline Appendix I passage (App. I No. 1, printed after 13.8.28 as 13.8.28d@001_0154-0157).
