Yudhishthira Asks About Garuda

Yudhishthira reminds Bhishma that he once called Garuda the best of birds, and asks how Garuda gained that rank, what his strength is, and why he is the enemy of serpents. Bhishma, addressing Krishna, says that Krishna himself is called Suparna and Garuda from beginning-less time, and asks his leave to tell the story. Krishna answers that Yudhishthira knows him as Bhishma does, and bids Bhishma tell how Garuda was born.

Verse 1 (13.19.1)

गरुडः पक्षिणां श्रेष्ठ इति पूर्वं पितामह । उक्तस्त्वया महाबाहो श्वेतवाहं प्रशंसता ॥

garuḍaḥ pakṣiṇāṃ śreṣṭha iti pūrvaṃ pitāmaha | uktastvayā mahābāho śvetavāhaṃ praśaṃsatā

Grandsire, mighty-armed one, you said earlier, when praising the white-horsed Arjuna, that Garuda is the best of birds.

Note on the text: The speaker heading (`युधिष्ठिर उवाच) slipped into the text; removed from the verse and made the speaker (the page's heading carries a stray backtick, 13-19-1x, so the parser left the speaker empty). A curiosity has arisen in me to hear about this: how did Garutman attain pre-eminence among birds, O scorcher of foes?

suparṇo vainateyaśca kena śatruśca bhoginām | kiṃvīryaḥ kiṃbalaścāsau vaktumarhasi bhārata

And how did Suparna, son of Vinata, become the enemy of serpents? What is his valour and what his strength? You should tell me, O Bharata.
