Kashyapa's Boons to Kadru and Vinata

Bhishma begins the story of Garuda as he heard it from Parashurama on Kailasa. Kashyapa grants his wives Kadru and Vinata a boon: Kadru chooses a thousand equal sons, Vinata two sons stronger than all of them. Kadru lays a thousand eggs and Vinata two. When Kadru's sons hatch after five hundred years, Vinata, impatient, breaks one egg and sees a son born without his lower body. Aruna, enraged, curses his mother to become the slave of her rival, and promises that his younger brother will set her free.

Verse 1 (13.20.1)

युधिष्ठिर महाबाहो शृणु राजन्यथातथम् । गरुडं पक्षिणां श्रेष्ठं वैनतेयं महाबलम् ॥

yudhiṣṭhira mahābāho śṛṇu rājanyathātatham | garuḍaṃ pakṣiṇāṃ śreṣṭhaṃ vainateyaṃ mahābalam

Mighty-armed Yudhishthira, listen, O king, exactly as it was, about Garuda, the best of birds, Vinata's son of great strength.

Note on the text: The speaker heading (`भीष्म उवाच) slipped into the text; removed from the verse and made the speaker (the page's heading carries a stray backtick, 13-20-1x, so the parser left the speaker empty). Not in the critical edition's constituted text: lines 17-18 of the CE's inline Appendix I passage (App. I No. 1A, printed after the end of No. 1 as 13.8.28d@001A_0017-0018); Wikisource divides it into verses differently. It continues adhyaya 19. The three summary lines printed above the page's table (headings for the story of Kashyapa, Kadru and Vinata) are not verses and are not added.

Verse 2 (13.20.2)

तथा च गरुडो राजन्सुपर्णश्च यथाऽभवत् । यथा च भुजगान्हन्ति तथा मे ब्रुवतः शृणु ॥

tathā ca garuḍo rājansuparṇaśca yathā'bhavat | yathā ca bhujagānhanti tathā me bruvataḥ śṛṇu

purā'haṃ tāta rāmeṇa jāmadagnyena dhīmatā | kailāsaśikhare ramye mṛgānnighnansahasraśaḥ

Long ago, dear child, I fell in with the wise Rama, son of Jamadagni, on the lovely peak of Kailasa, as I was killing deer by the thousand.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text: lines 21-22 of the CE's inline Appendix I passage (App. I No. 1A, printed after the end of No. 1 as 13.8.28d@001A_0021-0022); Wikisource divides it into verses differently. Corrected रामेणि → रामेण (misprint in Wikisource; the page's own footnote reads रामेण सङ्गत, and the critical edition's passage reads rāmeṇa).

Verse 4 (13.20.4)

तमहं तात दृष्ट्वैव शस्त्राण्युत्सृज्य सर्वशः । अभिवाद्य पूर्वं रामाय विनयेनोपतस्थिवान् ॥
