The Birth of Garuda and the Wager of Kadru and Vinata
Vinata, grieving and afraid of the curse, waits for the time her son foretold. After another five hundred years Garuda is born, the strong eater of serpents, and his elder brother Aruna is seen in the sky as the dawn. Garuda leaves his mother at once and grows. Meanwhile Kadru and Vinata see the horse Uccaihshravas near the sea; Kadru says it is not of one colour, Vinata that it is wholly white, and they stake their freedom on it: whoever is wrong becomes the other's slave.

Note on the text: The speaker heading (`भीष्म उवाच) slipped into the text; removed from the verse and made the speaker (the page's heading carries a stray backtick, 13-21-1x, so the parser left the speaker empty). Not in the critical edition's constituted text: lines 60-61 of the CE's inline Appendix I passage (App. I No. 1A, printed after the end of No. 1 as 13.8.28d@001A_0060-0061); Wikisource divides it into verses differently. It continues adhyaya 20. The four summary lines printed above the page's table are not verses and are not added.

Corrected सर्वकामैः कदाऽर्चितः → सर्वकामैरथार्चितः (misprint in Wikisource; कदा for अथ, which gives no sense, as in the critical edition's sarvakāmair athārcitaḥ).
Verse 8 (13.21.8)
तस्मिंश्च विहगे तत्र यथाकामं विवर्धति । कद्रूश्च विनता चैवागच्छतां सागरं प्रति ॥

'The wager pleases me, O queen, with slavery as the stake, without doubt. Hold to the truth, good fortune to you; I too shall hold to the truth.'
Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text: lines 88-89 of the CE's inline Appendix I passage (App. I No. 1A, printed after the end of No. 1 as 13.8.28d@001A_0088-0089); Wikisource divides it into verses differently. The page prints no heading for this verse, and the parser carried Kadru over from the previous heading; it is Vinata's answer to Kadru's question (the verse addresses Kadru as राज्ञि, and the next line in the CE, 13.8.28d@001A_0090, is the narrator's statement that Vinata agreed to the wager), so it is given to Vinata. Removed the closing quote (') that Wikisource prints after the last word, closing the passage opened with a backtick in the heading of 21.1. The page ends here, without the CE's following lines (13.8.28d@001A_0090 ff.).
