Fasting Rules Equal to Sacrifices

Yudhishthira points out that the great sacrifices are beyond the reach of the poor and asks for a rule, within everyone's means, that gives the same fruit. Bhishma relates the teaching of Angiras: a man who takes a single meal only on every second, third, fourth day and so on up to every thirtieth day, while offering oblations to Agni for twelve months and keeping his vows, wins the fruit of a named sacrifice, a splendid vimana, the company of the daughters of the gods, and a stay of stated length in the worlds of Indra, the Rudras, the Adityas, the Vasus and Brahma. He ends by assuring Yudhishthira that the poor can obtain the fruit of sacrifice in this way.
