Rudra Questions Sanatkumara on the Principles
Yudhishthira, curious about the teaching on the Self, asks Bhishma to relate it, and Bhishma introduces a conversation between two teachers, Rudra and Sanatkumara. Rudra approaches the seated Sanatkumara and, once welcomed, asks him about the Person, the self-related, the elemental and the divine, the threefold liberation, the signs of death and the divinities in the body, and about the deathless state beyond pleasure and pain. Sanatkumara begins his answer with the counting of the principles, twenty-four or twenty-five, and the four natural creations that arise from the Unmanifest and from egoism.

Verse 1 (13.165.1)
pitāmahena kathitā dānadharmāśritāḥ kathāḥ | mayā śrutā ṛṣīṇāṃ tu saṃnidhau keśavasya ca
The Grandfather has told the stories that rest on the dharma of giving, and I have heard them in the presence of the sages and of Keshava.
Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text: lines 1-2 of the CE's inline Appendix I passage (App. I No. 11, printed after 13,110.137d as 13,110.137d@011_0001-0002); otherwise vulgate-only. The page prints the heading "युधिष्ठिर उवाच" (13-165-1x) before this verse; it is kept as the speaker. The CE heads the passage "yudhiṣṭhiraḥ" (@011_0000).
Verse 2 (13.165.2)
punaḥ kautūhalamabhūttāmevādhyātmikīṃ prati | kathāḥ kathaya rājendra tvadanyaḥ ka udāharet
Now my curiosity has risen again, this time about the teaching on the Self. Tell those accounts, O king of kings; who but you could relate them?
Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text: lines 3-4 of the CE's inline Appendix I passage (App. I No. 11, printed after 13,110.137d as 13,110.137d@011_0003-0004); otherwise vulgate-only. Line 1 reads कथाः कथय where the CE has kathāṃ kathaya (@011_0004); a variant, base reading kept.
Verse 3 (13.165.3)
eṣa yādavadāyādastathānujñātumarhati | jñāte tu yasmiñjñātavyaṃ jñātaṃ bhavati bhārata
Let this heir of the Yadavas also give his consent; for when that one thing is known, O Bharata, everything that is worth knowing is known.

Afterwards, grandfather, we shall hear the duties of kings, those worth hearing; but for the present you ought to satisfy the sages' curiosity.

From here on, great king, I shall relate the conversation of two teachers, each endowed with a direct vision of the true nature of things, gained from both the Sankhya and the Yoga treatises.
Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text: line 10 of the CE's inline Appendix I passage (App. I No. 11, printed after 13,110.137d as 13,110.137d@011_0010); otherwise vulgate-only. The page prints the heading "भीष्म उवाच" (13-165-5x) here. This and the next three verses are prose, printed in the CE as one line (@011_0010). The page splits the text at a table margin in the middle of a word (साङ्ख्ययोगोभयशास्त्राधि-/गत…); the word is rejoined and the artificial line break and ' ।' removed.
Verse 6 (13.165.6)

It was thus: the venerable teacher Rudra, as he had been directed, approached the venerable Sanatkumara. Sanatkumara was seated, no larger than a thumb-joint, on a great couch in a splendid celestial car a thousand yojanas wide, bright as the young sun; he sat fixed in his posture, meditating on the immortal, the formless, that which brings no return, and what is born of the imperishable.

Restored from the critical edition (App. I No. 11, @011_0010): Wikisource's row (13-165-6e, a letter-numbered row) preserves only the tail "ष्टमुपससर्प भगवन्तमाचार्यं भगवानाचार्यो रुद्रः" (beginning mid-word, from उपदिष्ट); the opening of the sentence, "तद्यथा भगवन्तं सनत्कुमारम् … अथोपदिष्ट-", was lost. It is restored with the CE's words.
Verse 7 (13.165.7)
taṃ provāca svāgataṃ maheśvara brahmasuta etadāsanamāstāṃ bhagavān
Sanatkumara said to him: "Welcome, Maheshvara, son of Brahma! Here is a seat; let the Blessed One be seated."
Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text: line 10 of the CE's inline Appendix I passage (App. I No. 11, printed after 13,110.137d as 13,110.137d@011_0010); otherwise vulgate-only. The word is rejoined across the table-margin break (एतदास-/नमास्तां). The verse is prose; the text does not name the speaker of the welcome, but the words are addressed to Maheshvara (Rudra) and the reply that follows is Rudra's, so it is Sanatkumara's speech inside Bhishma's narration; the verse stays with the narrator.
Verse 8 (13.165.8)
ityukte cāsīno bhagavānanantarūpo rudrastaṃ provāca bhagavānapi dhyānamāvartayati | ityukte cāha bhagavānsanatkumārastatheti
When this had been said, the Blessed Rudra, of endless forms, took his seat and said to him, "Revered one, you too keep up your meditation." At this the Blessed Sanatkumara replied, "So be it."

Prose (CE @011_0010, end). The page's three table rows, cut at margins, are run together into one sentence-line; the '।' printed by the page inside the text is kept.
Verse 9 (13.165.9)
tathetyuktaśca provāca bhagavāñśaṅkarastadā | parāvarajñaṃ sarvasya trailokyasya mahāmunim
Having been answered "So be it," the Blessed Shankara then spoke to the great sage, who knows the higher and the lower of all three worlds:

vinā sarvaṃ tadavyaktādabhimanyasva śūladhṛk | bhūtasargamahaṅkārāttṛtīyaṃ viddhi vai kramāt
Apart from that, regard all this as coming from the Unmanifest, O bearer of the trident. Know the creation of the elements from egoism, in order, as the third.
Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text: lines 58-59 of the CE's inline Appendix I passage (App. I No. 11, printed after 13,110.137d as 13,110.137d@011_0058-0059); otherwise vulgate-only. ahaṅkārācca bhūteṣu caturthaṃ viddhi vaikṛtam | ahaṅkārācca jātāni yugapadvibudheśvara
And know that the fourth is the modified creation among the elements, arising from egoism. From egoism, O lord of the gods, there were born at one time

saviśeṣāṇi bhūtāni pañca prāhurmanīṣiṇaḥ | caturviṃśāttu vai proktātpañcaviṃśo'dhitiṣṭhati

ete sargā mayā proktāścatvāraḥ prākṛtāstviha | ahaṅkārācca jātāni yugapadvibudheśvara
These are the four natural creations that I have described here. And from egoism, O lord of the gods, there were born at one time

ahaṅkārācca bhūteṣu vividhārthaṃ vyajāyata | indriyairyugapatsarvaiḥ so nityaśca samīkṣate
From egoism there arose, among the elements, a manifold diversity of objects. With all the senses at once he, the eternal one, perceives them.

maruttvaṃ satvasargaśca tuṣṭiḥ siddhistathaiva ca | vaikṛtāni pravakṣyāmi śṛṇu tāni mahāmate
The state of the Maruts, the creation of sattva, contentment, and likewise perfection: these are the modified creations; I shall tell them, so listen to them, O great-minded one.

pañcamo'nugrahaścaiva navaite prākṛtaiḥ saha | aindrepyahamadhopyanyanmamātmani ca bhāsvaraḥ
The fifth is grace; these nine, together with the natural ones. In the realm of Indra too am I; below as well, and elsewhere; and the radiant one is in my own self.
Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text: lines 72-73 of the CE's inline Appendix I passage (App. I No. 11, printed after 13,110.137d as 13,110.137d@011_0072-0073); otherwise vulgate-only.

nistatvaścaiṣa deveśa boddhavyaṃ tu na buddhyate | yadi buddhyetparaṃ buddhaṃ buddhyamānaḥ surarṣabhaḥ | prabuddho hyabhimanyeta yoyaṃ nāhamiti prabho
He is without principle, O lord of gods; what is to be known he does not know. If, as he awakens, he were to awaken to the supreme Awakened One, O best of gods, then, awakened, he would think, "This one here is not I," O Lord.
