Sanatkumara Teaches Rudra the Sankhya Doctrine

Sanatkumara, speaking to Rudra, sets out the ranked principles of the Sankhya doctrine, from mind and egoism through intellect and the Great principle to the Unmanifest and the Person, and counts the twenty-four principles. He explains how the unawakened and the awakening Self, entangled with egoism and the three qualities, goes forth into creation again and again, and how the twenty-fifth and the twenty-sixth are distinguished. He closes by calling this knowledge the means of crossing the ocean of ignorance and promises to speak next of the threefold liberation.

Sanatkumara said

Verse 1 (13.168.1)

indriyebhyo manaḥ pūrvamahaṅkārastataḥ param | ahaṅkārātparā buddhirbuddheḥ parataraṃ mahat

Mind comes before the senses, and beyond it is egoism; beyond egoism is intellect, and beyond intellect is the Great principle.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); the CE has it only as Appendix I No. 11, lines 13,110.137d@011_0275-0276 (printed after 13.110.137d). The heading `सनत्कुमार उवाच (with a stray backtick) had slipped into the verse text; removed and made the speaker (Sanatkumara addresses Rudra/Shiva throughout, as the page summary says). The critical edition's Appendix I passage has one more line before this verse (13,110.137d@011_0274, 'sāṃkhyajñānaṃ pravakṣyāmi parisaṃkhyānidarśanam'), which Wikisource lacks; not added.

Verse 2 (13.168.2)

mahataḥ paramavyaktamavyaktātpuruṣaḥ paraḥ | etāvadetatsāṃkhyānāṃ darśanaṃ devasattama

Beyond the Great is the Unmanifest, and beyond the Unmanifest is the Person. This much, O best of the gods, is the view of the Sankhyas.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); the CE has it only as Appendix I No. 11, lines 13,110.137d@011_0277-0278 (printed after 13.110.137d).

Verse 3 (13.168.3)

avyaktaṃ buddhyahaṅkārau mahābhūtāni pañca ca | manastathā viśeṣāśca daśa caivendriyāṇi ca | etāstatvacaturviṃśanmahāpuruṣasammitāḥ

The Unmanifest, intellect and egoism, the five great elements, the mind, the particulars, and the ten senses: these are the twenty-four principles, which are reckoned as measuring up to the Great Person.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); the CE has it only as Appendix I No. 11, lines 13,110.137d@011_0279-0281 (printed after 13.110.137d). Wikisource reads एतास्तत्वचतुर्विंशन्महापुरुषसम्मिताः for CE eṣā tattvacaturviṃśan mahāpuruṣasaṃmitā (recension variant, Wikisource reading kept).

Verse 4 (13.168.4)

budhyamānena deveśa cetanena mahātmanā | saṃyogametayornityamāhuravyaktapuṃsayoḥ

O lord of the gods, they say that the Unmanifest and the Spirit are in everlasting union through the great-souled, conscious knower who is coming to know.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); the CE has it only as Appendix I No. 11, lines 13,110.137d@011_0282-0283 (printed after 13.110.137d). Corrected बुद्ध्यामानेन → बुध्यमानेन (misprint in Wikisource; 'बुद्ध्यामान' is not a word; CE budhyamānena).

Verse 5 (13.168.5)

ekatvaṃ ca bahutvaṃ ca sargapralayakoṭiśaḥ | tamaḥsaṃjñitametaddhi pravadanti triśūladhṛk

Oneness and plurality, with creations and dissolutions by the crore: this, O bearer of the trident, they call by the name of darkness.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); the CE has it only as Appendix I No. 11, lines 13,110.137d@011_0284-0285 (printed after 13.110.137d).

Verse 6 (13.168.6)

samutpāṭya yathāvyaktājjīvā yānti punaḥpunaḥ | ādireṣa mahānātmā guṇānāmiti naḥ prabho

Drawn forth, as it were, from the Unmanifest, living beings go forth again and again. This great Self, we hold, O Lord, is the beginning of the qualities.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); the CE has it only as Appendix I No. 11, lines 13,110.137d@011_0286-0287 (printed after 13.110.137d).

Verse 7 (13.168.7)

guṇasthatvādguṇaṃ cainamāhuravyaktalakṣaṇam | etenādhyuṣito vyaktastriguṇaṃ cetayatyuta

Because it abides in the qualities they also call it a quality, marked by unmanifestness. Dwelt in by this, the manifest becomes aware of the threefold quality.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); the CE has it only as Appendix I No. 11, lines 13,110.137d@011_0288-0289 (printed after 13.110.137d).

Verse 8 (13.168.8)

acetanaḥ prakṛtyeṣu na cānyamanubudhyate | budhyamāno hyahaṃkāro nityaṃ mānāprabodhanāt

Unconscious among the products of nature, it does not become aware of anything other than itself. Egoism, though ever seeming to know, does so only through conceit and not through true awakening.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); the CE has it only as Appendix I No. 11, lines 13,110.137d@011_0290-0291 (printed after 13.110.137d).

Verse 9 (13.168.9)

vimalasya viśuddhasya nīrujasya mahātmanaḥ | vimalodāraśīlaḥ syādbudhyamānāprabuddhayoḥ

Of the stainless, wholly pure, faultless, great Self, the nature would be pure and noble toward the one who is coming to know and the one who is unawakened.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); the CE has it only as Appendix I No. 11, lines 13,110.137d@011_0292-0293 (printed after 13.110.137d). Corrected विमलस्व → विमलस्य (misprint in Wikisource; व misprinted for य; CE vimalasya). Corrected विमलोदरशीलः → विमलोदारशीलः (misprint in Wikisource; long ā dropped; CE vimalodāraśīlaḥ).

Verse 10 (13.168.10)

draṣṭā bhavatyabhoktā ca satvamūrtiśca nirguṇaḥ | budhyamānāprabuddhābhyāmanya eva tu nirguṇaḥ

He becomes a witness and not an enjoyer, embodied in sattva yet free of the qualities. Other than the one who knows and the one who is unawakened is the one who is truly free of the qualities.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); the CE has it only as Appendix I No. 11, lines 13,110.137d@011_0294-0295 (printed after 13.110.137d).

Verse 11 (13.168.11)

upekṣakaḥ śucistābhyāmubhābhyāmayutastathā | budhyamāno na budhyeta buddhamevaṃ sanātanam

Indifferent, pure, and unjoined to both of those, he is the eternal Awakened One; the one who is coming to know does not know him.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); the CE has it only as Appendix I No. 11, lines 13,110.137d@011_0296-0297 (printed after 13.110.137d).

Verse 12 (13.168.12)

sa eva buddheravyaktasvabhāvatvādacetanaḥ | sohameva na me'nyosti ya evamabhimanyate

Because the intellect is unmanifest by nature, that same one is unconscious. He who thinks thus says, "I am that very one; there is none other than me."

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); the CE has it only as Appendix I No. 11, lines 13,110.137d@011_0298-0299 (printed after 13.110.137d).

Verse 13 (13.168.13)

na manyate mamānyosti yena cetosmyacetanaḥ | evamevābhimanyeta budhyamānopyanātmavān

He does not think, "There is another than I, by whom I, though unconscious, am made conscious." Even while knowing, he thinks just so, being without a true self.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); the CE has it only as Appendix I No. 11, lines 13,110.137d@011_0300-0301 (printed after 13.110.137d).

Verse 14 (13.168.14)

ahameva na me'nyosti na prabuddhavaśānugaḥ | avyaktastho guṇāneṣa nityamevābhimanyate

"I alone am; there is none other than me; I do not follow the will of the awakened." Standing in the Unmanifest, he ever takes the qualities to be his own.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); the CE has it only as Appendix I No. 11, lines 13,110.137d@011_0302-0303 (printed after 13.110.137d).

tenādhiṣṭhitatatvajñairmahadbhirabhidhīyate | ahaṅkāreṇa saṃyuktastatastamabhimanyate

Therefore the great knowers of the principles say that he is presided over by it. Joined with egoism, he then takes it for himself.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); the CE has it only as Appendix I No. 11, lines 13,110.137d@011_0304-0305 (printed after 13.110.137d). Verse 16 (13.168.16)

kṣetraṃ praviśya durbuddhirbudhyamāno hyanātmavān | ahameva sṛjatyanyaddvitīyaṃ lokasārathiḥ

Having entered the field, the dull-witted one, though knowing, is without a true self. The "I" itself brings forth another, a second, the charioteer of the world.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); the CE has it only as Appendix I No. 11, lines 13,110.137d@011_0306-0307 (printed after 13.110.137d). Verse 17 (13.168.17)

sarvabhāvairahaṅkāraistṛtīyaṃ sargasaṃjñitam | tato bhūtānyahaṅkāramahaṅkāro mano'sṛjat

Through all states of being and through the egos came the third, called creation. Then egoism brought forth the elements, and egoism brought forth the mind.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); the CE has it only as Appendix I No. 11, lines 13,110.137d@011_0308-0309 (printed after 13.110.137d). Verse 18 (13.168.18)

sarvasrotasyabhimukhaṃ samprāvartata buddhimān | tathaiva yajñe bhūteṣu viṣayārthī punaḥpunaḥ | indriyaiḥ saha śūlāṅka pañca pañcabhireva ca

The intelligent one set himself in motion, facing every current; so too, in sacrifice and among beings, seeking objects again and again, with the senses, five and five, O bearer of the trident-mark.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); the CE has it only as Appendix I No. 11, lines 13,110.137d@011_0310-0312 (printed after 13.110.137d). Verse 19 (13.168.19)

mano veda na cātmānamahaṅkāraṃ prajāpatiḥ | na veda vāpyahaṅkāro buddhiṃ buddhimatāṃvara

The mind does not know the Self; Prajapati does not know egoism; and egoism does not know the intellect, O best of the intelligent.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); the CE has it only as Appendix I No. 11, lines 13,110.137d@011_0313-0314 (printed after 13.110.137d). Corrected चात्मानमङ्कारं → चात्मानमहङ्कारं (misprint in Wikisource; ह dropped; CE ahaṃkāraṃ).

evamete mahābhāga netare nayavādinaḥ | ahaṅkāreṇa saṃyuktaḥ srotasyabhimukhaḥ sadā

So it is with these, O greatly fortunate one, and not otherwise, say those who teach by method. Joined with egoism, he is ever turned toward the current.

evameṣa vikārātmā mahāpuruṣasañjñakaḥ | pratanoti jagatkṛtsnaṃ punarādadate'sakṛt

Thus this modified self, called the Great Person, spreads out the whole world and draws it in again, time and again.

Verse 22 (13.168.22)

sasaṃjñatvājjagatkṛtsnamavyaktasya hṛdi sthitam | saṃviśadrajanīṃ kṛtsnāṃ niśānte divasāgame

Being endowed with awareness, the whole world rests in the heart of the Unmanifest, entering it through the entire night, until the night ends and the day comes.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); the CE has it only as Appendix I No. 11, lines 13,110.137d@011_0319-0320 (printed after 13.110.137d). punarātmā vijayate bahavo nirguṇāstathā | ajñānena samāyuktaḥ sovyaktena tamotmanā

Again the Self prevails, and there are many who are free of the qualities. Joined with ignorance, he stands with the Unmanifest, whose nature is darkness.

If he were to think, "There is one higher than I beyond me," he would not again and again make himself, and would cast it off.

etamavyaktaviṣayaṃ sūkṣmaṃ manyeta buddhimān | pañcaviṃśaṃ mahādeva mahāpuruṣavaikṛtam

The wise should regard this as the subtle object of the Unmanifest, the twenty-fifth, O great god, a modification of the Great Person.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); the CE has it only as Appendix I No. 11, lines 13,110.137d@011_0325-0326 (printed after 13.110.137d).

prabuddhau buddhavānetatsṛjamānamabuddhavān | guṇānpunaśca tāneva sotmanātmani nikṣipet

Having awakened, he knows this; while it was creating, he did not know. He would put those very qualities back again into the Self, by the Self.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); the CE has it only as Appendix I No. 11, lines 13,110.137d@011_0327-0328 (printed after 13.110.137d).

Whoever has come under the power of the Unmanifest and of ignorance, whose nature is darkness, though he is a knower, belongs to the unawakened; the Awakened is then experienced by him.

upekṣakaḥ śucirvyagraḥ soliṅgaḥ sovraṇo'malaḥ | ṣaḍviṃśo bhagavānāste buddhaḥ śuddho nirāmayaḥ

Indifferent, pure, undisturbed, without mark, without wound, spotless, the Blessed One, the twenty-sixth, abides, awakened, pure, free of disease.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); the CE has it only as Appendix I No. 11, lines 13,110.137d@011_0331-0332 (printed after 13.110.137d).

avyaktādiviśeṣāntametadvaidyā vadantyuta | etaireva vihīnaṃ tu kecidāhurmanīṣiṇaḥ

The learned declare this whole to run from the Unmanifest down to the particulars. But some thinkers describe the Self as devoid of these very things.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); the CE has it only as Appendix I No. 11, lines 13,110.137d@011_0333-0334 (printed after 13.110.137d).

nistatvaṃ budhyamānāstu kecidāhurmahāmate | kecidāhurmahātmānastatvasaṃjñitameva tu

Some of those who are coming to know say it is without principle, O great-minded one; and some great souls say it is named "principle" itself.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); the CE has it only as Appendix I No. 11, lines 13,110.137d@011_0335-0336 (printed after 13.110.137d).

tatvasya śravaṇādenaṃ tatvamevaṃ vadanti vai | satvasaṃśrayaṇāccaiva satvavantaṃ maheśvara

Because of hearing of the principle, they call it thus the principle; and because it resorts to sattva, they call it possessed of sattva, O Maheshvara.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); the CE has it only as Appendix I No. 11, lines 13,110.137d@011_0337-0338 (printed after 13.110.137d).

evameṣa vikārātmā budhyamāno mahābhuja | avyakto bhavate vyaktau satvaṃsatvaṃ tathā guṇau | vidyā ca bhavate'vidyā bhavettu grahasaṃjñitam

Thus this modified self, as it comes to know, O mighty-armed, becomes the Unmanifest in the manifest, sattva and sattva and the two qualities likewise. Knowledge becomes ignorance, and it would become what is called a seizure.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); the CE has it only as Appendix I No. 11, lines 13,110.137d@011_0339-0341 (printed after 13.110.137d). ya evamanubudhyante yogasāṅkhyāśca tatvataḥ | te'vyaktaṃ śaṅkarāgāḍhaṃ muñcante śāstrabuddhayaḥ
