Anushasana Parva · Adhyaya 172
The Lunar Vow for a Perfect Body
Yudhishthira visits Bhishma on his bed of arrows and asks how a man may gain beauty of limb, good fortune and the affection of others, and live happily in keeping with dharma, wealth and desire. Bhishma teaches a lunar vow begun in the month of Margashirsha when the moon stands in Mula: the lunar mansions, from Mula to Bharani and Ardra, are assigned in turn to the parts of the body from the feet to the hair. At the close of the vow one gives ghee to a brahmin learned in the Veda, and the man is born handsome, fortunate and whole in every limb, like the moon at the full.

Verse 1 (13.172.1)
शरतल्पगतं भीष्मं वृद्धं कुरुपितामहम् । उपगम्य महाप्राज्ञः पर्यपृच्छद्युधिष्ठिरः ॥
śaratalpagataṃ bhīṣmaṃ vṛddhaṃ kurupitāmaham | upagamya mahāprājñaḥ paryapṛcchadyudhiṣṭhiraḥ
Yudhishthira, the wise, approached Bhishma, the aged grandsire of the Kurus, as he lay on his bed of arrows, and put this question to him.
Note on the text: Removed the opening bracket and the speaker heading “वैशम्पायन उवाच” that slipped into the text (speaker set instead). The page also prints a heading line (“भीष्मेण युधिष्ठिरंप्रति … चान्द्रव्रताचरणप्रकारकथनम्”) above the table; it is not verse text and is not included. Not in the critical edition's constituted text: this whole adhyaya is Appendix I No. 12A (13.111.21d@012A_0001-0002 for this verse), an interpolation after CE 13.111.21d.
