Anushasana Parva · Adhyaya 189

What Pleases Vishnu, the Gods and Brahma

Asked by Indra what pleases him, Vishnu says that honouring brahmins, worshipping the cow, the ashvattha and gorochana, and the evening rite pleases him. Baladeva, the gods, Dharma, Agni and Vishvamitra each give a secret: touching a cow and ghee at dawn, offering in copper vessels, to whom gifts must not be given, the faults of touching cows, brahmins or fire with the foot, and a payasa śrāddha with a mantra to the cows. Finally the seven sages ask Brahma how the poor may gain the fruit of sacrifice, and he teaches sleeping under the open sky on the Pausha Rohini night.
