The Rewards of the Forest Hermits
At Uma's request Shiva describes the heavenly worlds won by forest hermits according to their austerities, and the good rebirth that follows. He then describes the wandering ascetics, the cart-folk, the Vaikhanasas and the thumb-sized Valakhilyas, and declares that the world itself is upheld by austerity. Narada closes by noting that the sages praised Shiva and took up still higher practice.
