Learning, Giving and Their Fruits

Uma goes on asking why fortunes differ, and Maheshvara answers from past deeds. Learned men who gave no help are born destitute, because what is not sown does not sprout; fools prosper because they gave out of compassion; those who served teachers and taught by the rule become retentive and clear of speech, while the proud of learning become dull. He then describes those who have every blessing, as the fruit of generous and disciplined living, and those who suffer in misery, as the fruit of a demonic, godless and pitiless life.
