Why Men Suffer Blindness, Disease and Deformity
Uma asks Shiva why some people are born blind or suffer diseases of the mouth, belly, urinary organs, throat, skin, limbs, feet and the humours. For each affliction Shiva names the wrongs done in an earlier life that bring it, such as coveting others' wives, harsh speech, poisoning or forbidden food, maiming others, and cruelty. He closes by saying that no one can escape the fruit of his own deed.
