Why Men Are Dwarfed, Mad, Childless, Poor or Impotent

Uma continues to ask why some people are born short-limbed, hunchbacked or crippled, why some are mad, childless, anxious and wretched, why some hold power only in barbarian lands, and why some are impotent. Shiva traces each to wrongs of an earlier life: false weights and measures, mockery of elders, cruelty to the young, ruinous usury, gifts made without faith, and the destroying of virility. He adds that women reap the fruit of their deeds in the same way.
