Kadru Curses the Serpents; Vinata Loses the Wager
Hearing Kadru's order, some serpents agreed reluctantly and others fled. Kadru cursed the fugitives: King Janamejaya, fourth in descent from Arjuna, would burn them in his serpent sacrifice. The obedient serpents became the black hairs of the horse's tail. When the two sisters went to see the horse, Vinata saw its black tail, admitted her defeat and offered to serve Kadru as her slave.
