Anushasana Parva · Adhyaya 233

On Meat, Gurus, Fasting, Continence and Holy Fords

Uma asks why some people eat meat and others give it up, and Maheshvara sets out the fault in eating it and the merit of abstaining, with the cases in which a man who cannot abstain may eat without sin. He then teaches how gurus are to be honoured, who counts as a guru, and why obedience to them outweighs sacrifice and austerity. Answering Uma's further questions, he describes fasting and how a householder may break a fast in need, the fivefold guarding of continence, and the origin of holy fords with the rule for bathing at them. He closes by promising to speak next of gifts and the worship of the gods and ancestors.

Note on the text: Restored from the critical edition's inline Appendix I No. 15 (after 13.134.57d), lines @015_2984-2985: Wikisource's page for this adhyaya (233) is a stray copy of Shanti Parva 12.359-360 (Narayaniya) apart from three genuine lines (labelled 13-233-62 to 64), so the real adhyaya is missing there. In the critical edition it is part of the continuous Appendix I No. 15 passage printed after 13.134.57d: Wikisource 232 ends at @015_2983 and Wikisource 234 begins at @015_3120, so Wikisource 233 is @015_2984-3119 (the page's own heading lines name its subjects: meat-eating and abstaining from it, honouring gurus, and bathing at holy fords). Written in Devanagari with the critical edition's words unchanged (hemistich lines paired into verses; verse divisions follow the sense). Uma asks. The CE heading "umā" is printed at line 2983 and the heading "maheśvaraḥ" at line 2985; going by the sense (lines 2984-2985 are the question, 2986 onward the answer), Uma speaks these two lines and Maheshvara begins at 2986.
