The Shraddha Rite and the Ancestors
Uma asks Maheshvara how the rite for the ancestors (the pitrimedha) is to be done, and he gives its places, months and lunar days, the brahmins to invite and avoid, the purifying and forbidden things, the foods and the length of satisfaction each gives, and the order of the offering of three rice-balls. Uma then asks how the ancestors, who live in the southern quarter, are nourished by offerings made on earth, and Maheshvara explains the havya and kavya rites for gods and ancestors and why humans must perform them.
