Garuda Seizes the Elephant and the Tortoise

Kashyapa tells Garuda that the elephant and the tortoise fight at a lake and can be taken together when the tortoise has come out and the elephant is off guard. Garuda seizes both as they battle, kills them with his talons and flies off to find a place to eat. He alights on a huge branch of a vast tree, which breaks under him over a company of sages; he carries it away, and the sages name him Garuda. A heavenly voice tells him to drop it among the Kuvindas at the edge of the sea, where it destroys thirty-six realms.

Verse 36 (13.26.36)

ततो गत्वा ततः शाखां मुमोच पततांवरः । तया हता जनपदास्तदा षट्त्रिंशतो नृप ॥

tato gatvā tataḥ śākhāṃ mumoca patatāṃvaraḥ | tayā hatā janapadāstadā ṣaṭtriṃśato nṛpa

Going there, that best of fliers let the branch fall, and thirty-six realms were destroyed by it then, O king.

Note on the text: Restored from the critical edition (App. I No. 1A, 13.8.28d@001A_0336): Wikisource prints जनपदा as asterisks ("हता ********* दास्तदा" → "हता जनपदास्तदा"). Corrected षड्विंशतो → षट्त्रिंशतो (misprint in Wikisource; the form षड्विंशतो is not regular; CE ṣaṭtriṃśato (thirty-six)). Not in the critical edition's constituted text: CE Appendix I No. 1A, lines 335-336, printed inline after 13.8.28 as 13.8.28d@001A_0335-0336.

Verse 37 (13.26.37)

स देशो राजशार्दूल ख्यातः परमदारुणः । शाखापतग इत्येव कुविन्दानां महात्मनाम् ॥

sa deśo rājaśārdūla khyātaḥ paramadāruṇaḥ | śākhāpataga ityeva kuvindānāṃ mahātmanām

That region, O tiger among kings, became known as most dreadful, and is called Shakhapataga, "where the branch fell", of the Kuvindas, the lofty-souled.

Note on the text: Removed a stray quote mark and a doubled danda printed after the verse-end mark. Not in the critical edition's constituted text: CE Appendix I No. 1A, lines 337-338, printed inline after 13.8.28 as 13.8.28d@001A_0337-0338. Wikisource reads महात्मनाम् ("high-souled"); the CE has दुरात्मनाम् ("evil-souled"), which agrees with the preceding verses. Wikisource's reading is kept as a recension variant.
