Anushasana Parva · Adhyaya 41

Garuda Follows Narayana into the Darkness and the Fire

Garuda continues his account to the sages. Longing to see Narayana, he goes to Badari and praises him; the Lord appears beneath the great pipal tree and sets out, and Garuda follows him past a vast fire where Shambhu practises austerity and into a sunless darkness. Bewildered, Garuda cries for help; the Lord dispels the darkness and Garuda sees a radiant realm of self-luminous beings. As they enter a blazing, fuelless fire, Garuda asks for protection, and the Lord reassures him, telling him that only the wise freed from attachment know him, and that Garuda, as his devotee, will know him in his gross form.

sa tathā dahyamāno'pi tejasā dīptavarcasā | prapannaḥ śaraṇaṃ devaṃ śaṅkhacakragadādharam

Though burning so in its blazing splendour, I took refuge in the god who bears conch, discus and mace.

Note on the text: Corrected दह्यमानोपि → दह्यमानोऽपि (misprint in Wikisource; avagraha dropped; CE dahyamāno 'pi). Verse 40 (13.41.40)

एवं विलपमानस्य ज्ञात्वा मे वचनं प्रभुः । मा भैरिति वचः प्राह मेघगम्भीरनिस्वनः ॥

evaṃ vilapamānasya jñātvā me vacanaṃ prabhuḥ | mā bhairiti vacaḥ prāha meghagambhīranisvanaḥ

As I lamented thus, the Lord, hearing my words, said "Do not fear," in a voice deep as a thundercloud.

Verse 42 (13.41.42)

ज्ञापितश्चापि यत्पित्रा तच्चापि विदितं महत् । वैनतेय ममाप्येवमहं वेद्यः कथञ्चन ॥

jñāpitaścāpi yatpitrā taccāpi viditaṃ mahat | vainateya mamāpyevamahaṃ vedyaḥ kathañcana

What your father has taught you, that great matter too is known to me. In just this way, O son of Vinata, I too am knowable only with difficulty.

Note on the text: The god's words, no printed heading; whole-verse speech, so given to Narayana (input null). Verses 42-44. Not in the critical edition's constituted text (found in the vulgate recension); the CE has it only as Appendix I No. 3A, lines 13,013.006d@003A_0248-0249 (printed after 13.13.6d).

bhavāṃstu satataṃ bhakto manmanāḥ pakṣisattama | sthūlaṃmāṃ vetsyase tasmājjagataḥ kāraṇesthitam

But you are always my devotee, with your mind on me, O best of birds; therefore you will know me in my gross form, abiding as the cause of the world."

Note on the text: Corrected कारणेस्थितम्' ॥ → कारणेस्थितम् ॥ (misprint in Wikisource; stray quotation mark). The god's words end. The CE prints the heading सुपर्ण inside this verse (13,013.006d@003A_0254, before line 2); the page ends here with its colophon. Reading kept: वेत्स्यसे (CE vetsyate).
