Garuda Follows the Lord to the Lake of Fires

Garuda tells the assembled sages how, reassured by the Lord, he followed him through the sky to a lake blazing with thousands of sacrificial fires and filled with unseen voices chanting the Vedas. Losing sight of the god, he searched in distress until thousands of Garudas surrounded him; he then praised Narayana with a long litany of names. A kindly voice bade him fear nothing, and he saw the god at the hermitage of Nara and Narayana and asked him to explain the wonder.
