The Lord Reveals His Fourfold Nature to Garuda
The Blessed Lord answers Garuda's questions: the fires and chanting voices seen in the lake belong to disciplined worshippers who have turned their knowledge and sacrifice toward him. He explains that he has divided himself fourfold for the good of the worlds (Vasudeva, Sankarshana, Pradyumna, Aniruddha; and Brahma, Shiva, Skanda), that the gross form Garuda saw is only the doorway to the subtle, and that he is reached through knowledge, non-violence and single-minded devotion. He tells Garuda to remain his devotee and vanishes; Garuda closes his account to the sages.
