Yavakrita Wins His Boon from Indra
Lomasha shows the Pandavas the Samanga, the Kanakhala hills and other holy places, and then Raibhya's hermitage, where Bharadvaja's son Yavakrita perished. Resenting the honour paid to Raibhya and his sons, Yavakrita performs fierce austerities to gain the Vedas without a teacher; Indra tries to deter him, at last appearing as an old brahmin trying to dam the Ganga with sand, but grants the boon when Yavakrita will not yield. Bharadvaja warns his son that boons breed pride, telling how Baladhi's son Medhavin died when the mountains on which his life depended were broken, and cautions him against offending Raibhya; Yavakrita promises, but goes on harassing the seers.
