Ravana Marches Out: The Single Combats

As Rama's army settles into camp, bands of pishachas and lesser rakshasas attack it unseen, until Vibhishana destroys their power of invisibility and the monkeys kill them. Ravana then marches out in the array of Ushanas, Rama answers with the array of Brihaspati, and the champions pair off: Rama against Ravana, Lakshmana against Indrajit, Vibhishana against Prahasta, Sugriva against Virupaksha and others, in a clash that shakes the three worlds.

Versed in the rules of the science of war like a second Ushanas, he drew up his forces in the array of Ushanas and closed in on the monkeys.

Note on the text: Restored a missing word space (व्यूह्यचौशनसं → व्यूह्य चौशनसं). Line 1 is not in the critical text but appears in its apparatus (3.269.5b*1279, line 2); line 2 is the critical edition's 3.269.5cd (with हरीनभ्यवहारयत् for harīn sarvān ahārayat).
