Savitri's Vow and the Fateful Day
As the day of Satyavan's death approaches, Savitri undertakes a three-night vow, standing day and night, and her father-in-law Dyumatsena, though grieved, does not forbid it. On the fated morning she completes her rites, receives the hermits' blessings that she may never be widowed, and refuses food until sunset. When Satyavan sets out for the forest with his axe, she insists on going with him and wins leave from his parents; she walks beside him through the flowering woods, her heart torn as she watches for the hour.
