Savitri Returns and Tells the Sages

Dyumatsena suddenly regains his sight, but when his son does not return he and Shaibya search the woods all night in anguish until the hermits bring them back. One sage after another assures them, each by a different sign, that Satyavan lives. Late in the night Savitri and Satyavan arrive; questioned by Gautama, Savitri tells how Yama took her husband and how, praised with truthful words, he granted her five boons. The sages praise her for raising the royal house out of its misfortunes and return home.

Verse 1 (3.299.1)

etasminneva kāle tu dyumatseno mahābalaḥ | labdhacakṣuḥ prasannāyāṃ dṛṣṭyāṃ sarvaṃ dadarśa ha

At that very time mighty Dyumatsena regained his sight; with his vision now clear, he saw everything.

Verse 2 (3.299.2)

sa sarvānāśramāngatvā śaibyayā saha bhāryayā | putrahetoḥ parāmārtiṃ jagāma bharatarṣabha

Going round all the hermitages with his wife Shaibya, he fell into the deepest distress on account of his son, O bull among the Bharatas.

Verse 3 (3.299.3)

tāvāśramānnadīścaivavanāni ca sarāṃsi ca | tasyāṃ niśi vicinvantau dampatī parijagmatuḥ

All that night the couple wandered about, searching the hermitages, the rivers, the woods and the lakes.

Verse 4 (3.299.4)

śrutvā śabdaṃ tu yaṃ kaṃcidunmukhau sutaśaṅkayā | sāvitrīsahito'bhyeti satyavānityabhāṣatām

Whenever they heard any sound, they looked up, thinking it was their son, and said, "Here comes Satyavan with Savitri!"

Verse 5 (3.299.5)

bhinnaiśca paruṣaiḥ pādaiḥ savraṇaiḥ śoṇitokṣitaiḥ | kuśakaṇṭakaviddhāṅgāvunmattāviva dhāvataḥ

Their feet cracked, rough, sore and smeared with blood, their limbs pierced by kusha grass and thorns, they ran about like people out of their minds.

Note on the text: Corrected कुशकणअटकविद्धाङ्गावुनमत्ताविव → कुशकण्टकविद्धाङ्गावुन्मत्ताविव (misprint in Wikisource; broken conjuncts ण्ट and न्म; the critical edition reads kuśakaṇṭakaviddhāṅgāv unmattāv iva).

Verse 6 (3.299.6)

tato'bhisṛtya tairvipraiḥ sarvairāśramavāsibhiḥ | parivārya samāśvāsya tāvānītau svamāśramam

Then all the brahmins who lived in the hermitages came up to them, gathered round, comforted them and brought them back to their own hermitage.

Verse 7 (3.299.7)

tatrabhāryāsahāyaḥ sa vṛto vṛddhaistapodhanaiḥ | āśvāsito'pi citrārthaiḥ pūrvarājakathāśrayaiḥ

There, with his wife beside him and surrounded by aged ascetics, the king was consoled with wonderful tales drawn from the stories of kings of old.

Note on the text: Corrected आश्वासितोपि → आश्वासितोऽपि (missing avagraha).

Verse 8 (3.299.8)

tatastau punarāśvastau vṛddhau putradidṛkṣayā | bālyavṛttāni putrasya sāvitryā darśanāni ca | śokaṃ jagmaturanyonyaṃ smarantau bhṛśaduḥkhitau

Yet, though comforted, the two old people, longing to see their son, recalled his childhood doings and the sight of Savitri, and remembering them sank together into grief, deeply distressed.

Note on the text: Wikisource has three lines here against two in the critical edition (3.282.8: tatas tau punar āśvastau vṛddhau putradidṛkṣayā / bālye vṛttāni putrasya smarantau bhṛśaduḥkhitau); the extra words सावित्र्या दर्शनानि च / शोकं जग्मतुरन्योन्यं appear in the critical edition only in its apparatus (star passage 1330, after 3.282.8c).

Verse 9 (3.299.9)

hāputra hāsādhvi vadhu kvāsikvāsītyarodatām | brāhmaṇaḥ satyavākteṣāmuvācedaṃ tayorvacaḥ

"Ah, son! Ah, virtuous daughter-in-law! Where are you, where are you?" they wept. Then a brahmin among them, truthful in speech, spoke these words to the two of them.

Note on the text: Corrected सत्यवाक्येषामुवाच → सत्यवाक्तेषामुवाच (misprint in Wikisource; य for त, the relative pronoun has no sense here; the critical edition apparatus reads satyavāk teṣām). Line 1 answers to the critical edition 3.282.9cd; the critical edition's 9ab (punar uktvā ca karuṇāṃ vācaṃ tau śokakarśitau) is absent here, and line 2 is found in the critical edition only in its apparatus (star passage 1331, after 3.282.9).

Note on the text: The Gautama speaker heading before this verse carries the row id "3-83-299x" on the Wikisource page — a typo for 3-299-11x; the heading is genuine (the critical edition also has gautama uvāca at 3.282.11) and is kept.
