Dhritarashtra Leaves Hastinapura for the Forest

At dawn, after the fire-rite on the Kartika full moon, Dhritarashtra leaves his palace in bark and deerskin with Gandhari, honouring the household with parched grain and flowers. The women of the royal houses cry out; Yudhishthira, weeping, falls to the ground and Arjuna restrains him. The Pandavas, Vidura, Sanjaya, Dhaumya and Brahmins follow, Kunti leads Gandhari, the royal women go too, and the wives of all classes pour onto the highway in grief.
