The Road to Yama's City and How the Righteous Travel It

Yudhishthira asks Krishna how far the world of Yama lies, what the road is like, and how men cross it. Krishna says it is eighty-six thousand yojanas of waterless, shelterless way, and describes the terrors with which the soul, drawn on by Yama's messengers, is driven along it: the wicked go beaten, wounded, devoured and starving, thieves, killers and those who rob Brahmins suffer worst. Yudhishthira faints at the account and, on reviving, asks how men may cross in comfort. Krishna lists the gifts, fasts, vows, pilgrimages and virtues by which the righteous ride in splendid cars, honoured by apsarases and Gandharvas, to Yama's city, and ends with those who worship him or Shiva with single-minded devotion.
