The Rules of Eating, the Handful for Cows, and the Merit of Sesame and Sugarcane

Yudhishthira asks for the rule of eating, and Krishna lays out how a twice-born man should prepare, sit, eat and rinse, naming the food that is unfit and the Chandrayana penance for eating it. He then describes the offering of a handful of fodder to cows and its merit, praises sesame as pure and sin-destroying, and forbids pressing sesame or sugarcane in a mill.

ato'nyathā tu bhuñjāno brāhmaṇo jñānadurbalaḥ | tenānnenāsurānpretānrākṣasāṃstarpayiṣyati

But a Brahmin who eats otherwise, weak in knowledge, will with that food satisfy asuras, ghosts and rakshasas.

svamucchiṣṭaṃ tu yo bhuṅkte yo bhuṅkte muktabhojanam | cāndrāyaṇaṃ caretkṛcchraṃ prājāpatyamathāpi vā

One who eats his own leavings, or food left by another, should perform the Chandrayana, the Krichchhra, or else the Prajapatya penance.

Note on the text: Corrected चरेन्कृच्छ्रं → चरेत्कृच्छ्रं (misprint in Wikisource; न् for त्; critical-edition Appendix caret kṛcchraṃ). Not in the critical edition proper (vulgate Vaishnava-dharma section); found in Appendix I No. 4, lines 2338–2339 (printed inline as 14,096.015d@004_2338–2339).

Verse 16 (14.109.16)

The man who eats from a woman's vessel is a sinner, and so is he who eats women's leavings. He who eats together with her eats liquor itself; the sages who see the truth have found no atonement for him.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition (found in the vulgate recension only; not in Appendix I No. 4 either). These three lines have no counterpart in the Appendix, which passes from the penances of verse 15 straight to 'pibataḥ patite toye' (verse 17).

Verse 17 (14.109.17)

पिबतः पतिते तोये भोजने मुखनिस्सृते । अभोज्यं तद्विजानीयाद्भुक्त्वा चान्द्रायणं चरेत् ॥

pītaśeṣaṃ tu tannāma na peyaṃ pāṇḍunandana | pibedyadi hi tanmohāddvijaścāndrāyaṇaṃ caret

What is left after drinking is not to be drunk again, O son of Pandu. If a twice-born drinks it through delusion, he should perform the Chandrayana.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition proper (vulgate Vaishnava-dharma section); found in Appendix I No. 4, lines 2342–2343 (printed inline as 14,096.015d@004_2342–2343).

Whether silent or not, and not looking at the ground or around at the quarters, the Brahmin should eat according to rule, and should not give away his leavings.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition proper (vulgate Vaishnava-dharma section); found in Appendix I No. 4, lines 2346–2347 (printed inline as 14,096.015d@004_2346–2347). The page's first line (मौनी वाऽप्यथवा भूमौ नावलोक्य दिशस्तथा) differs from the Appendix's (maunī vāpy atha vāmaunī prahṛṣṭaḥ saṃyatendriyaḥ); kept as the base reading, being good Sanskrit.

Verse 21 (14.109.21)

udakyāmapi caṇḍālaṃ śvānaṃ sūkarameva vā | bhuñjāno yadi vā paśyettadannaṃ ca parityajet | bhuñjāno hyatyajanmohāddvijaścāndrāyaṇaṃ caret

If while eating he sees a woman in her courses, a Chandala, a dog or a pig, he should abandon that food. If through delusion he eats without abandoning it, the twice-born should perform the Chandrayana.

Note on the text: Not in the critical edition proper (vulgate Vaishnava-dharma section); found in Appendix I No. 4, lines 2350–2352 (printed inline as 14,096.015d@004_2350–2352).

tilāndadyāttilānbhakṣyāttilānprātarupaspṛśet | tilaṃtilamiti brūyāttilāḥ pāpaharā hi te

One should give sesame, eat sesame, and touch sesame in the morning; one should say "sesame, sesame," for sesame seeds take away sin.

Verse 36 (14.109.36)

The twice-born must not sell sesame, whether bought or received as a gift. He who uses sesame for anything other than food, anointing and gifts becomes a worm in a dog's filth and sinks there with his ancestors.

tilānnapīḍayedvipro yantracakre svayaṃ nṛpa | pīḍayanhi dvijo mohānnarakaṃ yāti rauravam

ikṣuvaṃśodbhavaḥ somaḥ somavaṃśodbhavā dvijāḥ | ikṣuṃ na pīḍayettasmādikṣughātyātmaghātakaḥ

Soma is born of the stock of the sugarcane, and Brahmins are born of the stock of Soma. Therefore one should not crush sugarcane; the destroyer of cane destroys himself.

ikṣudaṇḍasahasrāṇāmekaikena yudhiṣṭhira | brahmahatyāmavāpnoti dvijaścedyantrapīḍakaḥ | tasmānna pīḍayedikṣuṃ yantracakre dvijottamaḥ

For every one of a thousand stalks of cane that a twice-born presses in a mill, O Yudhishthira, he incurs the guilt of killing a Brahmin. Therefore the best of the twice-born should not crush sugarcane in a press.
