The Horse Sacrifice Completed; the Earth Given and Returned
The horse is slain, the offerings are made, and Yudhishthira smells the smoke of the omentum that removes sin. He gives Vyasa the earth as his fee; Vyasa returns it and asks for gold in its place, and Yudhishthira, who will not keep what belongs to Brahmins, has it all divided among the priests, then gives cows threefold. Vyasa shares his portion with Kunti. After the closing bath Yudhishthira honours the kings, Babhruvahana, and the Vrishni heroes and sends them home, while the sacrifice is remembered for its rivers of food and ceaseless gifts.
