The Golden-Sided Mongoose Disparages the Sacrifice
Janamejaya asks for any marvel that occurred at his grandfather's sacrifice, and Vaishampayana tells of one that came when the sacrifice had ended. As gifts were being proclaimed and flowers fell on Yudhishthira's head, a mongoose with one golden side came out of a hole and declared in a human voice that the whole sacrifice did not equal a measure of flour given by a gleaner of Kurukshetra. The astonished Brahmins ask who he is and why he disparages the rite, and the mongoose begins to explain.
