Nakula's Tale of the Gleaner and His Gift of Flour

After Yudhishthira's horse sacrifice, the golden-sided mongoose Nakula tells the assembled Brahmins of a gleaning Brahmin of Kurukshetra who, in a famine, gave away his family's few handfuls of barley flour, share after share, to a hungry guest. The guest was Dharma himself, who praised the gift and took the whole family to heaven. The crumbs of that flour had turned half the mongoose's body to gold, and he says Yudhishthira's great sacrifice does not equal a prastha of it. Vaishampayana ends by telling Janamejaya not to wonder at it.

Verse 1 (14.92.1)

hanta vaḥ kathayiṣyāmi dānasya phalamuttamam | nyāyalabdhasya sūkṣmasya vipradattasya yaddvijāḥ

O twice-born, now I shall tell you the highest fruit of a gift that is lawfully earned, small, and given to a Brahmin.

Note on the text: Wikisource adhyaya 92 corresponds to critical edition adhyaya 14.93 (the two divide this part of the Ashvamedhika Parva differently). Wikisource reads हन्त वः कथयिष्यामि दानस्य फलमुत्तमम् where the critical edition has हन्त वो वर्तयिष्यामि दानस्य परमं फलम् (recension variant, kept).

Verse 2 (14.92.2)

dharmakṣetre kurukṣetre dharmajñairbahubhirvṛte | uñchavṛttirdvijaḥ kaścitkāpotirabhavatpurā

Long ago, in the holy field of Kurukshetra, crowded with many who knew dharma, there lived a Brahmin who gleaned his food like a pigeon.

Verse 3 (14.92.3)

sabhāryaḥ sahaputreṇa sasnuṣastapasi sthitaḥ | babhūva śuklavṛttaḥ sa dharmātmā niyatendriyaḥ

He lived there in austerity with his wife, his son and his son's wife, a righteous man of pure livelihood, with his senses under control.

Note on the text: Wikisource reads बभूव शुक्लवृत्तः where the critical edition has वधूचतुर्थो वृद्धः (recension variant, kept).

Verse 4 (14.92.4)

ṣaṣṭhe kāle sadā vipro bhuṅkte taiḥ saha saṃvṛtaḥ

That Brahmin ate, always together with them, only at the sixth mealtime.

Note on the text: Not auto-matched: the single line = CE 14,093.004a, with तदा … सुव्रतः in the critical edition for सदा … संवृतः (recension variant, kept). Wikisource splits the critical edition's three-line verses 004–007 into couplets, so verses 4–9 map to CE 004a–007e in order.

Verse 5 (14.92.5)

ṣaṣṭhe kāle kadācittu tasyāhāro na vidyate | bhuṅkte'nyasminkadācitsa ṣaṣṭhe kāle dvijottamaḥ

Sometimes even at the sixth mealtime he had nothing to eat; then that best of Brahmins would eat at some later sixth mealtime.

Note on the text: Not auto-matched: = CE 14,093.004c and 004e.

When a dreadful famine came, he, who lived like a pigeon, had no store of grain at all, O Brahmins; hear how it was.

Note on the text: Not auto-matched: = CE 14,093.005a and 005c.

kṣīṇauṣadhisamāvāpo dravyahīno'bhavattadā | kālekāle'sya samprāpte naiva vidyeta bhojanam

His stock of grain and herbs was exhausted and he was left without means; when the hour for a meal came, there was no food to be had.

Note on the text: Corrected क्षीणाषैदि → क्षीणौषधि (misprint in Wikisource; garbled; the critical edition has kṣīṇauṣadhisamāvāyo). Not auto-matched: first line = CE 14,093.005e (CE kṣīṇauṣadhisamāvāyo; Wikisource reads समावापो, kept as a recension variant); second line = CE 14,093.006a.

uṣṇārtaśca kṣudhārtaśca viprastapasi saṃsthitaḥ | uñchamaprāptavāneva brāhmaṇaḥ kṣucchramānvitaḥ

Scorched by heat and tormented by hunger, the Brahmin held firm in his austerity; yet he found no gleanings, and was worn down by hunger and fatigue.

Note on the text: Not auto-matched: = CE 14,093.007c and 007e (the second line is a variant of 007e).

Note on the text: First line: CE 008a reads स तथैव क्षुधाविष्टः स्पृष्ट्वा तोयं यथाविधि; Wikisource's सार्धं परिजनेन ह is taken from CE 007e (recension variant, kept). Second line = CE 008c.

kṛtajapyāhnikāste tu hutvā cāgniṃ yathāvidhi | kuḍavaṃkuḍavaṃ sarve vyabhajanta tapasvinaḥ

Having finished their prayers and daily rites and offered oblations in the fire according to rule, those ascetics divided the flour among themselves, one kudava each.
